Demand for NWN1?

Players,

We are at a bit of a crossroads here... As you probably know, we have been without a NWN1 vault for several weeks now. Before this occurred, we had a very small number of players that played regularly in weekly campaigns and a handful of ALFAns that would log on occassionally to take a stroll down memory lane with their old and/or favorites PCs.

I am proud to lead the last remaining NWN1 DM team in ALFA, however, we are finally coming to the conclusion that Sembia, and ALFA NWN1, may have run its course. If there is a huge public outcry, we will explore our options in recovering/updating an old vault and try to get it centrally hosted. Barring that, we will bring it offline. I encourage anyone who plays or played NWN1 in ALFA to post here if you see yourself returning to this game. I'll make an announcement next weekend based on your response. If appropriate, we'll use that thread to post your good-byes, epitaphs, etc.

If we opt to retire the mod, I will maintain a copy in case anyone wants to run a random weekend session or even a regular campaign, but there is no point in consuming ALFA resources by maintaining a PW for a small handful of people. If you fall into this group, please note that and we can coordinate separately.

Cheers,
Valdimir

Sorry to see it go. I'm still theoretically interested in NWN 1, but I haven't even gotten around to moving my PC since NC went down. I'm euro, and those things require a DM, heh. So no outcry from me - if the effort is not in relation to the actual demand, then letting something go simply is the natural thing to do.

Thanks for your considerate approach to this, and all the time you were at your player's service.

I too am sorry to see the server go, but it is hard for me to imagine a scenario that would allow me to play my NWN1 PC. All my allies are gone, there is no underdark server, etc. And playing alone is no fun of course, so, while I would love to see a more active NWN1 so I could possibly play my girl, I can't say I would be first in line to make it happen (its not like a lot of NWN1 PCs are going to flock to Sheyreiza's side!).

:(

My sentiments are similar to Mik's above. I really do miss the NWN1 ALFA and have great memories of my PC, but I also never made it off of NC after it went down and really never fully integrated my PC in the east after TLR/WD went offline.

I know many of your NWN1 players have good reasons to prefer the current platform and support whatever the hardcore of NWN1 residuals want to do.

I'm fully into NWN2 now, but that's just me.

Thanks for all you've done bringing it this far!

I had assembled a group to play ALFA NWN1, applications approved and all that, but I couldn't get DM coverage due to schedules so I decided to just DM them myself in my own mod Lantan University. Tonight we play session four, "Ask a Planar," with a surprise guest lecturer! ;)

I wonder how feasible it would be to just have a campaign for any remaining ALFA NWN1 players? Not a PW, just a campaign mod with a DM or two. With the vault down all you would need is an export of your PC and someone willing to host a mod with ALFA haks occasionally. If you only have one server, then all PC's get put on that local servervault. Might be worth trying to organize for anyone with PC's that entered oblivion when their home went down.

This ideas has merit. I too am sad to see NWN1 ALFA go, but it would make sense to focus our resources on the NWN2 platform now. Having a NWN1 outlet on the side, similar to our play-by-post forums, would be a nice option to nothing at all.

Well, I'm still interested in playing the weekly campaign that Arkan has/had going. But I'm not going to shed too many tears if the curtains are pulled.

I would love to play in a regular NWN1 campaign with the other ALFAns - but of course, the DM(s) would have to figure out how to bring us together and keep us from killing each other - my PC, being the daughter of Lolth, a Matron Mother, high priestess and generally all around bad-girl would not voluntarily mix with most ALFAn characters. Now, there were times when she did, like when a common threat unified good and evil alike (the Shade war) and when she was forced to (like in the dwarven dungeons) but the plot would have to be something like that to bring ALFA's "dirty dozen" type NWN1 PCs together.

Just as an alternative, if Sembia is the only NWN1-ALFA server currently active, the shared NWN1-Live vault could quite simply be RAR'd up and emailed to Sembia's host, and unpacked into the servervault directory there.

We used a similar trick for TSM before BG Live, while our current vault setup was under development.

I can understand the complicated emotional algebra that comes into play with trying to decide when to bring something like ALFA for the NWN1 platform to the end; a new major technological hurdle can be a reasonable time to reconsider the future of things. But in this case, at least, I believe it doesn't have to dictate the decision.

Please let me know if I may be of assistance in any way.

I still play NWN1 with my old ALFA group once a week and I'd probably still play in ALFA if I had a campaign to join at a reasonable timeslot.

I still play NWN1 when I can. The biggest issue for me is finding the time available to do so.

Its easy to have local versions of NWN servers running...it doesnt have to be anything too hardware intensive... Ive been doing it sice ?October when we set up a stand alone version of Moonshaes on Tuesday and Tursday nights for a campaign a DM dreamt up ..........

Personally i hate NWN2 ....Ughh...too bright, too many primary colours, i hate the designs, I hate the transition system, I hate the "Disney-fication" .... its my age i know...and NWN1 is just a DM tool like any other ....but its cheap, has lots of community support, has low computer overheads, makes managebly sized modules, has loads of add on content etc etc ... so it suits us perfectly.

Dont dismiss old technology just because its old...I find it suits us better .. and is more "maleable" than NWN2 ...hence it will be my prefered platform for quite some time..

However "IF" ALFA should choose to quit the NWN1 arena...can i have copies of the old servers as they were at the end, to learn more about building/scripting etc and maybe keep some of the more complete regions alive in our limited way?

Or does ALFA intend to just let them fade into......................

Heck, post the mods on NWVault, it can be marketing for the current ALFA live servers. That way any old ALFAns that want to use them can ad hoc. With local vault PC's and some trust, you'd effectively have a permanent vault system. ;)

doesn't this thread belong in General Discussion?

For what it's worth we are willing to keep MI up as a retirement for NWN1 PCs who want to play occasionally w/ any DM of their choice.
