Hello from Aelred

*Aelred, after spending his life's savings on a resurrect scroll, crosses his fingers and begins to recite*

Hello to ALFAns new and old,

After a very long hiatus from ALFA I'm finally returning to ask permission to continue building 014 Cormanthor.

First off thanks to all you die-hards for keeping the RP flame going with all your hard work. It is exciting that the ALFA community is still alive and well.

The past two years I've been playing LOTRO and loving the beauty of the graphics and animations as well as their great attention to Tolkien's details. But time and time again I would think back on my amazing RP sessions in Shadowdale NWN1 and how incredibly immersive it was. I'd also find myself missing all the creativity that went into NWN2 server building. But I'd hold myself from the temptation of coming back with thoughts of all the bad points the NWN2 engine has. For me these mainly fall under the graphics, models and animations. It kept surprising me how the NWN1 group still was so active. I mean how in the world could they stand those outdated clunky square models! Perhaps now I've finally gotten it.....it just isn't about the game engine at all, it is all about the RP. With Pen&Paper we don't even have a game engine and God knows that works. The game engine becomes alot less important when you keep RP as the main priority.

Anyway the last three months I've gotten more and more burnt out on LOTRO and have found myself returning to brainstorming mode for building 014 Cormanthor. I think for me alot of the joy is in the building process itself. Sure you want your end result to someday be used as a beautiful RP sandbox but often the process of creativity becomes your focus.

Is it is possible to pick up the project where I left off? If so who would I contact? I'm more than happy to also write up a fresh server proposal if need be.

Sincerely,
Aelred

Hi!

Why don't you join either Baldur's Gate or Western Heartlands instead? It'll be cool to get another server up faster.

Welcome back, Aelred. Always wonderful to have an ALFAn return. Doubly so when it's a builder of your caliber. Good to see you, whatever projects you undertake.

w00T!!

Aelred, your fantastic building skills inspired me to delve into the Toolset. For those of you who have not seen his work, it is beyond superlatives.

Is Aelred talking about NWN2? I thought he meant NWN1...

He's talking about NWN2.

I don't see a problem, Aelred, with continuing on 014. Seeing some screenshots from your old work, it was certainly one of the servers that I was most looking forward to seeing (despite the elves that live there!). I'll throw it before the other Admin and see what Aygero thinks.

I think there's still even a forum up for it somewhere below!

No. Guess I must have missed it.

And missed the point where you became DMA as well :P

Fantastic to hear from you again, Aelred. We're closing in on Live for Baldur's Gate, so it's an excellent time to attempt to get things rolling again on another server. I believe the next most progressed build besides Baldur's Gate is probably Teric's Western Heartlands, followed perhaps by Skullport. It's important to build from the heart though, so I'm sure the 014 project would be a good place to try to pick things back up.

Hope to talk to you soon, and help you get everything up to date with the new haks and such. You can also try rolling a PC on The Silver Marches to get back in-game and RPing with folks again, it's been a pretty active time lately. At times it reminds me of the old days on shadowdale, with enough PCs around to happen into some interesting RP and adventures even without a DM around (and with DMs around in the shadows often enough to keep it interesting).

Glad you found your way back!
