WD revival (take 3)

Post by Nalo Jade »

Is there anyone who can HDM Waterdeep for NWN1 that can be approved?

Is there anyone willing to host Waterdeep?

Is Waterdeep ready to go live or is work on the module still needed?

I'm really not sure how becoming an HDM works, but if Ayergo is willing to be HDM and the other HDMs are okay with that (Do they vote on new HDMs?) then what is required to bring this server live?

I have to concede that Zelknolf can be difficult to work with, (can't we all?) but If I were an HDM I don't think I would have forbade her from being an HDM.

In short is there still desire to have this server resurrected?

Also I would like to personally thank Zelknolf for all the work she has done on the old module as well as stepping up for the Tech position for NWN1. She deserves another "Thank you" imo especially after having the rug pulled out from under her.

I have had my personal differences with her, but I can't express enough that, having differences is a completely normal thing, and though it has been heated between us...it seems that her attitude has been one of some level of self-control that a great many others in much more community affecting positions in the past and some in the present have lacked entirely.

Zelknolf will not break ALFA, but discouraging folks from contributing will break ALFA.

I know that my virtua-persona is as annoying or more so to others in the community seeing her being "turned-down" on her offer to help does not embolden me to try to do more. (not that I could even if I wanted to, but if I could I certainly would think twice about it...or at least find out ahead of time before I began work on something...)

We should make sure somehow that when someone wants to do something like this they are informed before they begin work whether or not they will be allowed to become an HDM. I don't think anyone will disagree on that?

Finished, reviewed, and accepted. It would have been dubbed live on November 7 if I was accepted as HDM.

If anyone takes up the server, he/she will want to look at the default OnAreaEnter scripts. Currently, they will tend to produce memory shortages in heavily-trafficed areas due to not checking if their pseudoheartbeats are already firing. A simple variable and check for it:

Code: Select all

if(GetLocalInt(OBJECT_SELF, "pseudo_hb") == 1)
    PseudoHeartbeat();
SetLocalInt(OBJECT_SELF, "pseudo_hb", 1);
Would prevent it from doing this, while preventing the spawn system from consuming memory in areas that get no travel. One willing to keep track of the number of players in an area (+1 to a counter on area enter, -1 on area exit) and using it to disable the pseudoheartbeat in empty areas might see more memory conservation, so long as you remember to tell it to despawn everything when it does that. (memory consumed by heartbeat scripts of 10 spawned creatures > memory consumed by a 15-second pseudoheartbeat that verifies that nothing should be spawning in the area.)
Also I would like to personally thank Zelknolf for all the work she has done on the old module as well as stepping up for the Tech position for NWN1. She deserves another "Thank you" imo especially after having the rug pulled out from under her.
Totally content for a second thread, but worth noting that I only intend on finishing off works in progress, and ahp_3.1 is sitting on the DM ftp, lookin' mighty finished. I suppose you're welcome if the thanks still apply, but I'm tired of working for a group of people who're about as supportive and empathic as a day-old bowl of cold oatmeal. :P
