Hi, figured i would start a fun little thread.
In the past 300 years, my brother and I popped out with an assortment of creatively mundane uses for magic items. I'll start this thread out with one of my more entertaining ones:
Magic Items -- Decanter of Endless Water / Bag of Holding
Parking the "Decanter of Endless Water" angled down, with the lip below the rim of a large ceramic funnel, and the funnel lip entering the "Bag of Holding," all housed in a small shed, my brother created the magical Ever-Flushing Outhouse, complete with the world's best sanitation system.

From Wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bag_of_Holding
It can store a combined weight of up to forty times its own weight, and a combined volume of 30 to 250 cubic feet (0.8 to 7 m³). A living creature put in a bag of holding will suffocate after about 10 minutes.
If a bag of holding is overloaded, or if a sharp object pierces it (from outside or inside), the bag will rupture and be ruined, the contents lost forever in non-space.
I can imagine the ultimate children's prank ...
Regarding the bold text: No words has ever rang so true as it would in this case.

Can't remember if it was from some source book or from my own brain (you know how 20 years tends to dull the mind)
** But I had a tiny portals to the elemental plane of fire acting as garbage cans/ incinerators in a planescape campaign.
** Not exatly magic item but ........Tiny "shocker lizards" (?? MM2?? )) being housed in a central village and wired up to provide rudimentary electrical power to the households and numerous devices in the Temple. ((electric eels could work too))
(( completely OT but a great encounter is to have shambling mounds living in a symbiotic relationship with shocker lizards so the mounds keep getting juiced by the electricity and the lizards get protected...can really bump up the toughness of the encounter

))

Continual light cast on a pebble and tossed into a scroll case with a cork stopper. Remove cork, instant flashlight.

Works even better if cast on a circlet worn on the forehead with a little leather case over the gemstone. Ten you have a headlamp with both hands free

A rod of prestidigitation with a quill pen built into the other side to serve as an erasable pen. If you make a mistake writting turn it around and cast prestidigitation to erase it by cleaning if off the paper.

Modified featherfall ring used in logging. Timber! *the log drifts slowly to the ground being guided to land right where they want it.
Reduce spell used in "Ship in a bottle" model making factory. Shrink the model ship so you can set it inside and after the spell expires it returns to a larger size.
Unseen servants as guards in courtrooms.
Ropes of climbing used in ship rigging.

Continual Flame items are f'kin terrible for DMs. You have to do backflips just to use darkness as a thematic device or enviromental hazard.
Few things inspire greater DM hate than the nob with the continual light headband messing with your gloomy atmosphereic area.
IN OTHER NEWS:
sewage system connected to a sphere of annihilation.
immovable rods for scafolding.
decanter of endless water & bound fire elemental = steam power.
And of course Eberron already has Lightning Trains, Elemental Airships and Hydrofoil Elemental Boats.
And rust monster wands are a giggle to use with a crowbar.
