Please test the shared vault on BG and WHL

Post by Hialmar »

After the not so conclusive test of webdrive (lots of CEBs and even deleted characters) we have installed netdrive on both Baldur's Gate and Western Heartlands.
This is what we use for NWN1 and even if it isn't perfect it works quite well.
I'm afraid NWN2 is a different matter as Chamu use webdrive without any problems with NWN1.

Please test this other solution.

You just have to create a character on either BG or WHL beta servers, login, logout, on both servers for a few times and report here if you have problems.
It shouldn't take you a lot of time but it is invaluable for us.

I have a third solution that I think will be even better but we have to test every potential solution.

Thanks a lot.

Not finding many problems, other than my old BG characters showing on the WHL select screen.

This is because we have set it to cache directory lists.

It shouldn't affect operations hopefully.

while your at it fix these slow arse forums, Hialmar. Im sure all that money thats being donated could be used to get a better hosting company. These forums are the worst Ive ever experienced. If you need a better host I know a guy who runs a hosting site and could see what he could do for you. Its not really cool when it takes 5 min or more to load in one thread or to have the site just stall completely and wont load. I think the money ALFA donates could be better spent on a better site.

With the shared vault up I can see only one of my characters when logging into BG, but that character logs in fine. I'll try logging into WHL directly once I get back home.

I have a friend who runs a web-hosting company who told me recently he had a server just sitting open that ALFA could use. Patrice, I've given you my friend's contact info before - do we (ALFA) need a host for something?

Ive also contacted my friend who helps me run my guild forums. He works for a company called alienserverz. I asked him for pricing for our forums and website. Ill see what we can get from him and see if it would work in ALFAs budget. Im sure some of us would even donate more money if it means a better website/forums and maybe even hosting for gaming servers.

You can take a look at what he did for my gaming guild forums here:

http://theendless.alienserverz.com/index.php

We could upgrade everything to almost top of the line but as I said Im going to see what its going to cost.

No CEB, BG is not active so I can't double check, but I logged into WH with the same character that I last logged into BG. Loaded up fine. I created a new character in WH and will test with that one as well once BG is back up.

Thanks for the testing Sintaqx.

The characters not showing on BG are related to this directory caching I talked about.

In NWN1, I think that an HDM had to manually flush the cache.

As for changing the website/forum host I'm more than willing to look at any other solution but the thing is we have to find something that is about as cheap as what we have now.
This is because, most of the donations are used for the vault computer which is fast and this is way more important than the website/forum being fast.
You can wait for a few minutes for a forum to load but when you need to load/save your PC it better be fast or you get a CEB.

So to sum up, my priority is the vault not the forums.

Edit: Mik I'll contact him.

Update on vault testing: I created a character in WH and ran around with it for a bit on Saturday. Today I logged into BG, but the character was not there. I logged into WH and saw the character was still there. I left and created a character in BG and logged into WH after a little while. The new character does not show up on the list in WH.

Sintaqx I have flushed the cache on WH so now you should be able to see your new character there.

I cannot flush it on BG so you must wait for Ayergo to do that.

Kestenvarn, I have just deleted all your characters.

Thanks a lot for the testing.

I'll try to set an automatic flushing interval on WH to see if it works.
I'll flush it every hour so if you create a character on BG it will be available on WH after one hour.

I have also checked another option and it seems to work even better.
I just created a character on BG and then it was there on WHL only a few seconds later.

I created another new char on BG and was able to log in on WH almost immediately with it. I purchased stuff, logged out, and logged back in on BG, without anything I had purchased. When I logged back into WH I had nothing I had purchased before. Aside from that, no problems so far. Going to go get killed and see what happens.

Edit: Alright, I got killed on WH, logged out while dying, and logged into BG. full health, etc, as expected since the cache was not flushed. re-logged on WH and resumed dying. Once dead I logged back into BG, full health/etc then re-logged on WH. Ended up on the fugue plane and all my hp was removed. Basically the shared vault seems to be working with the cache updating on WH side, even with rapid log/relog. It does take a bit to load up the character list. I'd like to see the BG side updating quickly and test that a bit more as well.

Thanks indeed.

I'll ask ayergo to update his cache settings.
