Keyboarding combat

I've been in enough combats now to think that some people are still using the old mouse click approach to combat in NWN2. Trust me, it's a fatal approach. The best technique is to use the keyboard and keymap the find closest enemy and use default action to keys you can find and hit quickly in combat, especially for melee. It can keep your toon alive.

How does "Use default action" work? How do you know what the default action is, or how do you set it? If you have a hostile mob selected (using the "Select nearest enemy") is the default action an attack with whatever weapon you are armed with at the moment?

Don't forget cycling through targets. I've found this to be one of the real major improvements in the NWN 2 gameplay - as few as there are - and have been playing Wing Commander with the game ever since.

Agreed. Get yourself a mouse with a few extra buttons, map them to the "next hostile" key and the "default action" key (or use space bar for defualt action), and you will enjoy combat alot more. Of course, you have no idea who you are attacking and can easily end up attacking some hostile on the other side of a wall, thus bringing 5 more idle baddies storming your way all pissed off. But heh. Serisouly though I cannot imagine going back to trying to click on a target in combat manually.

Cool, thanks guys - while my PC is supposedly great at combat, I pretty much suck with the interface and have been doing the mouse-point-click thing and it pretty much .. well ..sucks. I have one of those mouses with extra buttons, so I will program yon buttons and see if that helps. Thanks again.

Let's see, yes to Mik that the use default action means attack with equipped weapon in combat. As for charging across the room, that's why I use the select closest enemy button, and hit it again if positions shift. I'd rather whack a new enemy that's close than draw an AoO by chasing after the same one, especially at 2nd level....

I have the spacebar keymapped to use default action, and the \ keymapped to select nearest enemy, or whatever the terms are called in the game.
