Basic Character Rules

Post by maxcell »

So, you hate to see all of that hard earned stuff go to waste as you lie there bleeding to death....

A tempting situation for a beginning PC who was so near to level 2 to make a new PC and "casually" find your body and "innocently" search, and only one of several examples of bad RP that can be experienced from time to time in a persistant RP world.

Until our RP101 class is up an running full force, please keep in mind the following situations that are a no-no:

Combat Logging - Logging off in the middle of In Game combat to save your PC from imminent doom. Remember, that in your PC's world, people will not just disappear in the middle of battle in order to escape death.

Static Loading - Until the scripting and mechanics can get worked out by our talented teams, please consider that going back multiple times to a static quest giver, to get the same quest again and again just is not believable, nor is it at all what Alfa is about. (unless of course it is a scripted repeatable quest, such as patrolling areas, grain delivery etc...). But to scout a cave over and over, report over and over, at what point would your character begin to think the quest giver is either daft or lazy and will just not take care of the problem you are reporting?

Looting Your Own Corpse - As demonstrated above, extremely bad form. And also an example of meta-gaming.

*Edit: Wynna -- Muling Creating throwaway PCs to drop their gold somewhere where your main PC can pick it up.

Multiple PCs/Multiple GSIDs/Multiple players of GSIDsALFA is a one member with one PC on one GSID community. Do not share your GSID with anybody. Do not share your CD key with anybody. Do not share the ALFA password with anybody. Members can and will be banned for this.

These are just a few topics covered in the upcoming course, but until then please take a moment and really READ the Alfa Player Manualput together by Rotku. There are many gems to be gleaned from doing so, none the least of which is getting some information on Alfa's Rulesfrom which I take this quote:
2.2 Cheating
Cheating involves a more severe form of metagaming. It is actively exploiting any bug or shortcoming in the game mechanics. Cheating is generally punished by a permanent ban and is not subject to the 90-day rule, as per Section 4.2.2 of the ALFA Charter.

Examples: (1) Logging in the middle of combat; (2) Muling gold or items from one of your PCs to another of your PCs
The server is a great one, and is a constant work in progress, so let's all do our part to keep the immersion level high so that everyone can enjoy their time in game and nothing detracts from any one individuals fun!

Can we add a section on dealing with a pantheistic society where most people venerate, worship, give thanks to, placate many gods..? Even priests of one god will sometimes give thanks or ask for help from other gods than their main (and in the case of the gods of fury, ask to be left alone :) )..

I do feel that some people new to Faerun get a very black and white view of the way gods operate in society..
On indefinite real life hiatus

[22:52] <Veilan> obviously something sinister must be afoot if a DM does not have his social security number in his avatar name!

"If two people using the same computer are both members of ALFA, two Gamespy IDs will be required."

OK, I guess this answers that question.

Best to make ALFA's administration/DMs of your server aware of any CDKey sharing ahead of time, so they don't get surprised by it and get off on the wrong foot.

Also clarifications:

Muling: (passing gear from one PC of yours to another) definitely includes items dropped by one, picked up by another. This is really just an indirect version of looting your own corpse- strictly unacceptable.

Re-rolling: It's fine to "retire" your newly-made character and make another with a similar name if you forgot something, provided you have not left the starting area with your PC. If you have already played with / earned XP with, or roleplayed with others using a character, you need to either:

1. Retire the PC you're no longer satisfied with, and start a new different PC
OR
2. Politely ask a DM about a rebuild, in which they can transfer your XP and gear over to a new version with a slightly altered name.

It is never OK to re-make the same PC (living or dead) over again on your own if it's been played in the Live module- especially if the PC has died. This violates the one-PC rule and, at times, also the Permadeath nature of our world.

Remember, once you start to play a new character, you can never go back to your prior one(s). Retirement is not a two-way street in ALFA, so consider carefully before retiring a PC.

Apologies to longtime members for whom this is obvious, with the new format comes a new batch of players who doesn't have the benefit of years of this in NWN1-ALFA to draw on.

I am not sure if it is exactly prohibited or just discouraged, and it goes back to various NWN1 discussions that'd come up when a server would be up on local vault for random RP. TPI was a common example for this during a short period of vault problems.

Basically it was "RP your character, no throwaway map-probe type guys."

That is, using a throwaway character as a scout, go as deep into caves and dungeons as you can at a dead run, take note of what's in there (dying in the process), so that eventually your non-throwaway character can benefit.

Anyhow yeah. That was discouraged. It's just another form of metagaming (your non throwaway PC having the accumulated knowledge of 10 dead map probe PCs).
