Doggies of Faerun

Post by Rick7475 »

My son wants a dog, along with an Nintendo Wii, for Christmas. Having secured the Wii, I was checking on what breed of dog we might get and I thought about the dogs of Faerun.

The only model for now is the wolfie, but I managed to make several breeds with differences in size, color, ability, and when you buy them, cost.

The gentlemen in the back are all members of the Argent Legion, a Spearman, Patroller, Scout (with a cool scout hat! Standard soft headress for all members of the Argent Legion) and an archer.

The dogs are as follows in order, each with a detailed description included when you buy them:

Ahrnhand (pronounced ARN-and, both H's are silent), or the Royal Dog, is a western canine that has its origins in what is today the Purple Marches of Tethyr.

The Daeraman (pronounced DEER-eh-men by everyone but the dwarves, who pronounce it da-ere-A-man) is also known as the Dwarven Dog.

Darovoi (pronounced dar-eh-VOI) is both the singular and plural of this vicious breed.

Femmari (FEM-air-ee) were likely a cross between corgi and beagles

The Garygan (gare-E-gann) is a rare dog which were reportedly first seen in Halruaa, but over the past two centuries have become recognizable in the North as well.

The Itago (eye-TA-go) are a miniature breed of dogs which are used throughout the East by merchants and caravan masters.

The Mot (MAHT) may have originated in Chult.

And don't mess with the Darovoi! They are all between 2 and 10 hps, level 1 fighter or commoner, some with feats and skills such as spot, listen, search, dodge, tumble, and knockdown (for the Darovoi!). Some are wimpy but awesome trackers (like the Mot). Others have absolutelty no use but to be cute and cuddly (like the Femmari) and others are extremely rare and have a blue glow but you ain't nobody at the Oscars without one (ie the Garygan). The main attack dog is the Darovoi, expensive but trained and well worth the gold for low level adventurers who like a little edge. But, if you ain't got the gold and want a loyal tough companion that spots trouble, I'd go for the Daeraman, best animal for your money if you want to live through level 1 :)

Credit is here, with more descriptions (included in the blueprint in game as well).

Looks like you've done a nice job with the templates- do you have scripts for them from NWN1 you're planning to use? We should probably give them the tech department ACR-treatment to get them tied into persistence - may be able to use some of the NWN1 horse code as well in terms of being able to tie them up at a persistent location and retrieve them later- I like that implementation a lot better than the "giant dog in my backpack" summon treatment that familiars and such get.

DMFI tools should also allow renaming of the doggies, I believe- with a better mechanism than the text-capture we used for horses.

I would definitely like to see them treated like the horse scripts when you buy em. The persistance is much better than the pet scripts we used in DF.

Rick, you are awesome. It's interesting that your pursuit of something for your son has given us a gift as well.

Kudos to you man, nice work and well done.

PS: If you put even a tenth of the work into your son as you do into ALFA, hes a lucky kid.

Having a dog got me through level 1 with Kail back in WD when all the suspicious waterdavians were making piles of l00t out of the more tight pursed.

Awsome for the low level player.

Only if the dog does not mistake the Halfling and Gnome for a snack with legs :P

Don't ask me why they put spikes on the worg model

But, yeah, halfling and gnomes can ride the big doggies with the spikes, just stick them on (literally) and they'll never fall off  I'd give 'em a little warning though.

OK, no they can't: owww.

That wouldn't be a mistake; gnomes smell of turnips for a reason, I say!
