Do it. It's so much better to not misunderstand you nerds on the boards.
Seek Ventrilo for clarity.

Yeah, very quick download, and even if you don't want to fumble through the readme stuff, people will likely walk you through enough of the controls for you to be able to make the app work.
*edit: if stuck using an internal mic, like on a laptop, I'd suggest confining the audio to earbuds or something so you don't end up with crazy feedback of internal speakers' output being caught by internal mic etc.

Its a voice-over-IP program, that allows you to actually talk (and listen) to the other ALFAns rather than just type at them.dergon darkhelm wrote:details please (for those of us who have no idea what you're talking about)

Swifts simple, un-fancy guide to hearing your fellow freaks.
1: Go here. Scroll down to the blue Client heading and click the download button (for users that have the G15 keyboard, scroll right to the bottom and download the 2.3.2.Beta.3 version, it will let you show on the keyboards LCD vent details)
2: Install and run it
3: Click the '->' next to the Username box. Click New and enter your desired username. The only other box on this screen you can concern yourself with is the Phonetic Box. Ventrilo, by default, will announce to you in the default Text to Speech voice when someone joins/parts. If the T2S voice butchers your nickname, spell it phonetically in this box to make it sound better.
4: Click the '->' next to Server. Click New and give it a name (eg ALFA). Enter the IP address of the server and click ok (check the #alfa topic for the details. I have been assured it needs no password nor the entering of a port number)
5: Very Important Step
Before you click connect, Click Setup. On the Voice tab, make sure the box labelled "Use Push-To-Talk Hotkey" is checked. There is a box just below here to set your hotkey (just click in the box and press your desired key).
Why do this?
The default settings enable and disable your mic based on the level of sound it is picking up. Once you go over the threshhold, it starts to automatically transmit whatever is feeding into the mic. This is easily triggerable even when not talking (loud TV in the background, nearby phone ringing etc). Nobody wants to hear your heavy breathing or the shocking way you discipline your children/wife/husband/leather clad gimp, so for the love of everyones sanity use push to talk.
Your done. Click ok on the setup screen, click connect and join whoever other crazy people are in there for your nerd talk. To talk, simply press and hold your push to talk key and talk away.
Edit: Also, use headphones if at all possible. The worst thing on vent is someone talking and hearing their voice feeding back through their own speakers.
