Re: Welcome to the new forums!
I disapprove. Forums are now trapped in the style of the website, which while fine for the website makes the forums unappealing.

No, this was all today.zicada wrote:Ah, so it's not only after changing to integrated forums today?
While writing the post, I would hit Preview every so often to make sure the thumbnails I was embedding were stacked up properly. The first few times it showed the thumbnails all lined up the way I wanted, then when I added in 6 more I got the error message. I went back and deleted all but three of the images and hit Preview, got the same error message.
I kept trying different combinations of embedded thumbnails. The most I could get the Preview to show so far (before getting that error message) has been 21. However, sometimes that error message would display when I had as few as 4 thumbnails embedded.

aaah! I think i know what it was. I've been clearing the servercache all the time when changing the CSS. Should work now though. Gonna take a couple hours break.KalevD wrote:No, this was all today.zicada wrote:Ah, so it's not only after changing to integrated forums today?

well this is different
It's nice having the forums feel like they are part of the same website as the main page

To read? Having everything jammed into a tiny column is the modern plague of web design. I want to use my entire monitor instead of stopping to scroll every other sentence.zicada wrote:What do you need so much horizontal space for ? I have to agree. The looks are nice and professional, but the text column really is far too small to have easy and smooth reading.
The power of concealment lies in revelation.
Re: Welcome to the new forums!
I've widened it as much as possible now.
You'll just have to get used to modern professional ways of doing things i guess guys
It's pretty much as wide as the pages of a book. You wish books were a lot wider ? Are they so narrow that it's hard to read ? I really think you're just complaining because you're not used to it. Give it a week.

There is wasted space, but it's also easier on the eyes to read lines this length.
It might cause problems with images though, they need the space.
The posts are also very cluttered. Disabling avs/sigs helps with this, but it'd be good if there were more ways to make things plain. Like if the post date, post subject, buttons, and poster statistics were made more efficient.
The Join Date, Post Count, Location statistics are noise, we don't need those for each post. They show up in your profile. Shrink the Post Subject, it's unimportant. Moving the post date out of the way might help. Why does the poster's name show up twice in each post? We can remove one of them. The post buttons could be subtle, like the "To Top" button in the bottom right corner of every post.

Mate, good is what the users deem good, not what is "modern". This statement is severely condescending and not suggesting you're taking the criticism seriously.zicada wrote:You'll just have to get used to modern professional ways of doing things i guess guys
Noone's belittling your effort. Personally I find the new look pretty good, and would give it the thumbs up wholeheartedly if the design somehow were to scale with resolution. It's severely annoying as is with a widescreen. Lacking functionality is kind of the opposite of professionalism.
Anyway, I have no idea of the exact difficulties of enacting such, but it'd transform a good effort into a great result.

Did you notice the icon at the end of said statement ?Veilan wrote:Mate, good is what the users deem good, not what is "modern". I just don't understand what functionality you're missing.
Why do you have to fill the entire page with stuff ?

Yeah, looking into autoresizing for images that are over 650px wide.Kest wrote:There is wasted space, but it's also easier on the eyes to read lines this length.

I disagree on cluttered. That layout i think is just fine,- pretty much standard phpBB and other forums style.
Agreed on icons though, been looking around for alternatives, but there's so much uglyness out there. Some nice black/white minimalistic ones would be nice for sure. I'll keep looking.

Resolution scaling.zicada wrote:I just don't understand what functionality you're missing.
It sure would be great to have a choice in the matter, instead of zic telling us that strawberry is the new flavour, and everyone disagreeing is quaintzicada wrote:Why do you have to fill the entire page with stuff ?

Again, I value the effort, and the integrated look is more sleek. If only it would get rid of the black bars at the sides that, added together, take up as much space as the text, I'd be leading the parade.

Re: Welcome to the new forums!
Well, if i made the entire content area any wider, it would break in 1024x768,- a resultion which is way to common to scrap. Also, the design is supposed to have black bars,- it's an intentional aspect of the entire design. It's also quite common around the net.Veilan wrote:Resolution scaling.zicada wrote:I just don't understand what functionality you're missing.

What you're referring to as resolution scaling, is usually called liquid width. The problem with that is that a design like the frontpage we use wouldn't work out,- and the page would look very different in various resolutions. Usually on those kinds of designs, images are very hard to do.
Integrated forums with the actual website is such a huge boon for too many reasons to even list.
I could get you a custom URL for a forums-only page with the default-look i guess,- but I'm 90% sure all of you guys who think this is horrible mostly think so because it's new and different. Try to use it a bit and see if it doesn't grow on you!

Re: Welcome to the new forums!
I am also in preference of more width use. And better colours. This may be the width of a book, but I'd rather not have to keep turning pages of a book either.
I do appreciate the integration, though.
Would it be possible to instead put the menus on the left into drop down menus up the top and use that space for the forum? Or at least shrink the font? Or maybe have a splitter bar (or whatever the proper web name for it is) and resize the message column dynamically?
