Specifically it's not illegal to download software you own, because of the nature of software ownership. If vendors sold you software (that is, this data we provide to you is yours in the same sense as if we bought you a chair), you'd be able to do all sorts of things to the software that would be bad for their business, on account that it's software and not a chair.

So they sell you the right to use their final copyrighted product, usually "as-is" and without warranty, and usually with the condition that "use" doesn't include those bad things that they don't want you to do (like reverse engineering it).

It thus means that it doesn't really matter where you get the wad of data, as long as you can demonstrate that you own the right to use it. Which unique CD keys are pretty good at.
I concur with the analysis of my learned colleague.

UPDATE: unbeknownst to me Veilan bought me NWN2 on GOG. His only condition is I that I become a loyal squire/bard of his PC. My PC must be named Kitt, Kitt would need to have ability to recite every David Hasselhoff hit song in game. I gladly accept my new role in ALFA. Thank you good sir.

ALSO Thanks for the offer of help Galadorn, and the advice Zelknolf.

exactly right, if you have keys you can use them again with replacement copies of your software. All you have is a license to use. You are still w/in the terms of the license by grabbing any copy you can get and plugging in your keys.
