Re: Why is ALFA population not growing?
If what they saw was bickering about the game and who is getting more attention, they yes this needs to stop:
It's not friends ribbing each other. When people bicker about XP gain rates, accuse each other of meta, complain about DMs being unfair and engage in penis measuring you can tell. There can and should be a place for complaints. Split the channel in #alfa-players and #alfa-customerservice or whatever. All gaming platforms have a system where players can lodge a request to correct an issue - we don't - we just have a system to control various forms of griefing (the PA complaint process).
However if what they saw was people joking around then your friends should look elsewhere for their gaming - we've had people like that in community before - thankfully they left:
Most easily offended people I have met do so out of a need for power & attention. People can tell that when I call Burt a sheep lover I'm not being mean to him (he does indeed love them) - but Gonz if your friends are super thin skinned about jokes etc. I don't want to go back to the days of Barrend where saying "damn" in chat was an offense - this is not a religious conservative gaming group where we act like we are in church. I've seen you take offense to very minor stuff in irc before - so I am skeptical of what you are posting here. I don't want to be a member of a community where I need to watch everything I say as if I am at work for fear I may offend the easily offended. Not sure what your people saw, but if it was what the community deems minor - we are better off without them. I don't want people who will complain about ALFA from the get go joining ALFA. I don't want to DM them, I don't want to build servers for them, and I don't want to play with them and live in fear admin will receive a complaint about a comment. These are the types of "easily offended" folks who do not get invited to the cool parties and who never see their co-workers after hours.
You've had an irc agenda for awhile and I have yet to meet the people you quote above or see an application from them or a comment. I'd love to talk to them directly about ALFA, positives and negatives. I don't hide stuff. There are pluses and minuses to every community. One of the minuses is the penis measuring via PCs and it is being dealt with.

Oh an one more thing - when Jern joined the entire bloody community came out to help him. even though he had never played DnD before, was a total noob and asked 10000000 stupid questions. Foam has donated ages of his time helping him. I think he has gray hair now.
So I'm darned offended by this entire thread. The complaints about ALFA are what is killing ALFA.

Re: Why is ALFA population not growing?
Oh and I avoid the chat like the plague. Unless like DD I have an IG emergency and need a DM or if my regular SE group wants to talk and plan about a session on a private channel, I don't log in. I just find it boring and mostly inane. Not my cup of tea. But, hey, whatever blows your dress up

Re: Why is ALFA population not growing?
Yeah. I'm not anti- chat or anything. Just not my cup of tea.
I can relay a story involving myself that highlights how difficult it can be to take the proper tone of IRC.
A few years back we were riffing away in chat and talking about the HBO series Deadwood. "WU!" "Swegen!" "Wu!"
As we're chatting, Mikayla logs in just as I type "San Francisco c*ck Sucker!" (without the asterisk)
One would have to be wholly familiar with the HBO series to understand that this was a cinematic quoatation from the series following an exhange between two characters (Mr. Wu and Al Swearingen), referring to a hated opponent.
Mik, being transgender and residing in San Francisco took it as an *obvious* anti-gay slur against her (a reasonable conclusion given that she couldn't read up the text to get context). It took me a series of PMs and online conversations to come to an understanding and recover our relationship.
These are the kind of things that go on every day in chat. It just happens. *shrugs* IRC might be a great place for the more irreverant, easy going, and chat-room behavior savvy new ALFAns. But it's not for everyone.

This also seems like an episode of a sitcom.dergon darkhelm wrote:Yeah. I'm not anti- chat or anything. Just not my cup of tea.

Re: Why is ALFA population not growing?
I said my peace on it. I've withdrawn form IRC. Don't worry, you won't hear from me again to be offended. Everything I wrote was in attempt to help. I admitted I lost my temper, and tried to explain it. I did not name names, I did not point fingers, I did not do anything to try to hurt, only to help.Castano wrote:Oh an one more thing - when Jern joined the entire bloody community came out to help him. even though he had never played DnD before, was a total noob and asked 10000000 stupid questions. I'm done with that. Frankly, I'm sorry for attempting. It was not accepted in the way it was meant, and instead started another fight. I'm trying to end this, if anyone else doesn't get it, I'll lay it out. Please just stop.
To the those that I got to RP with in game, you are the reason I stuck around, not the forums, not the IRC. I know that, I know how it works. I don't need anymore posts following this up trying to explain the obvious.

Re: Why is ALFA population not growing?
We need to relax a little, folks: flaming people who have concerns isn't the way to fix things. Let's close this to cool off a bit; gonz is a nice guy and I hope he will reconsider.
People talk of bestial cruelty, but that's a great injustice and insult to the beasts; a beast can never be so cruel as man, so artistically cruel.
