Re: How did you find out about Alfa?
Back before NWN1 came out, I was following the development of the game online.
I had played the old gold-box D&D games on the Comodore 64 and done a sparse (but rewarding) amount of PnP role playing. Once, I had gone over to a friends house who had AOL and the original Neverwinter Nights game (from the early 90's). I only saw it a couple of times... but I had major league envy because it seemed to combine the two. A PnP experience on the computer... simply awesome. When I first heard about NWN, I thought it was going to be similar to that game.
I quickly found out I was wrong, but through the message boards found that there were several groups planning to create the same sort of thing using the toolset... a persistant world using D&D rules that was about role playing, not "typical" MMORPG play (I had played Ultima Online when it came out with the same hopes). ALFA seemed the most dedicated to ensuring everything was about role play... so that's the one I signed up for... probably six months or a year before the game was even released.

I just realized I've done nothing but followed at I-KP's heels. (And I think I found Haze by a google search and spent there 2 months before they closed)

Burt told me about it back in 2001, or something. He and his partner Elorn used to tease me mercilessly.

Re: How did you find out about Alfa?
Real life friends with Ayergo. He told Acadius about it. Acadius applied, joined and subsequently many nights of "what the fuck are you doing staying up until 2am on the computer?!" ensued.
Acadius encouraged little ol' Halo-playing, Starcraft-obsessed me to try this different kind of gaming. Applied. Rejected. Bitched to Ayergo about his elitist gaming community. He told me my bio (Elrien, if anyone remembers her) sounded like something perfect for Alfa. Encouraged me to try again. Applied, accepted. Started staying up until 2am on the computer.

Lou's post reminded me of something (completely off topic): first time I ever played Halo was at Loulabelle's apartment. I sucked at it. Bad. Back to ALFA for me ...

Found ALFA in March of 2003. Applied and somebody must have liked my application since I got in the next day. First PC was my GameSpy ID at the time: Alacrity Fitzhugh. He exited the start area on Waterdeep, found a well and decided to explore it and was drained dry by stirges. Total lifespan: 5 minutes, tops!
My reaction was: ohhhh, a challenge!

I had an early WD character with a similar experience in the same well (I assume).Wild Wombat wrote:+1Swift wrote:Google search.

I mean who WOULDN'T climb down a well just to see what was there?
All of my early PC's should have had 8's in Intelligence and Wisdom.

Purely random channel surfing. Alfa lucked up.

Re: How did you find out about Alfa?
I found ALFA through the NWN1 online community somehow. I was searching for role playing servers and ALFA seemed to have a reputation for being very strict. Anyways, I gave the OAS a shot and was accepted.
Also, I did a few google searches and came across the original NWvault page. I was shocked to see three long lost images from my old campaign on NWN1 BG, including myself as a DM possessed NPC (on white horse).

HEEGZ, that link is priceless. I skimmed the first few pages of the comments thread (saw my own comment, from many years ago, whining about how long I'd been working on the Underdark server).
My fav quote:
To the hells with that - ALFA is still here. I am so impressed with y'all for keeping it alive. Good job folks.

My fav quote:
That was written by Hakkman in ... wait for it ... 2005. Eight years ago people were talking about how ALFA wasn't what it once was.I don't think that ALFA is what it once was. There are less players, less good role players, and less DM coverage. It is still the best PW that I've played on. Considering the age of NWN, ALFA could have degenerated like many other PWs. It is still there and one of the best (if not the one) out there
