As I said... there were 20-21 people at the auction and everyone had fun.
So... I think somehow it works. No sure how. but it does. (:

You'll have to ask someone who was there.

Best ingame events I know are player driven!
(also Castano made a tourney field for some reason)

Large, server-wide events are a hit or miss in most cases. A hassle for DMs when it comes to management, servers when it comes to latency and players when it comes to, well, everything else. A social event, similar to the auction, I imagine won't be so bad -- especially if a lot is player driven.

That being said, I find it especially awkward being in a large-group with a DM. I basically scale my RP dial down to 1 and get a word in every 7 minutes over having my PC blurt out random obscenities (or whatever fits my PC in the situation) just to avoid screen clutter, but I guess everyone is different.

It would be great to schedule these regularly on a calendar, in advance so people can clear the day off. MS has had a festival w/in the past 6 months that Cloud put on that was very well attended.

It will happen if participants don't want to suffer a sudden stroke and drop dead on the spot.

Excellent idea; folks who aren't interested or have objections for whatever reason don't have to be there, no one's forcing them. ;)

As for mage duals, there are clearly laid out rules for such in FR lore which we can loosely follow; under the terms of such any damaging spell effects are non lethal. Not too difficult to manage with our current -6hp cap/floor mechanics and a DM present (watch out for Ice Storms and such as closers though). Regardless, things are much more interesting if stuff is emoted rather than simply blasting via nwn2 engine mechanics, especially for ALFA's lower levels.

The fact NWN2 allows for destruction of certain kinds of placeables can lead to fun in mage duals btw; I remember winning a mage dual at a similar event on another PW years ago in slightly embarrassing fashion IC after blowing up some statues and having to pay for them. :)

Also, NPC participants, perhaps a cameo by a well known Realms NPC or two, local or otherwise.

Technically, if it is on a home server to a player, they'd essentially have to treat it like a 24 hour ban if they want to avoid the server stress, player chaos and overall emote spam that certain someones have mentioned.

Time out of game is just as important as time in game, so a single day off wouldn't kill anybody. Life will go on.

Or log in and carry on with tavern RP or cyber in another area, deal with lag if need be, not the first time BG's had 20 players and some lag.

24 hour ban indeed... sheesh, get over yourself dude. :)

Timezones is an issue. To offer everyone a chance to participate, hopefully such events could be stretched so that consistent DMage is had for at least 24hours. Which at the very least means more than one DM.
Yeah, in my opinion this could go for the entire day, or two days to give everyone who wants to be involved in this a chance to.
t-ice wrote: If you want to do a actual fighting tourney, probably best to split it OoCly in level categories (1-3, 4-6, ...) I don't find actual nwn2-engine fights too interesting a notion, but some folks probably do, anyway. Auctions are always a good idea, and hopefully it would offer PCs chances to trade between their items as well. For example, high levels could sell items that have become redundant due to newer acquisitions.
Categories based on skill, sounds like a fine idea, though it depends on how much participation there is in a given contest I'd say. As for the auction idea, I think that would fit in quite nicely, also its an area where PCs can take some of the work load off the DMs and handle something like that.
