Isn't it a bit silly though, to deny your PC something the game engine has decided he knows? Or start rolling different skills?

Boy, I've been fighting Orcs for almost twenty years. Now I ain't seeing them, and I ain't smelling them, but by all the gods I just know they're near. And that outcrop over there is exactly where they'd be if they were here. Which they are. So get your spear ready.

We deny ourselves game engine processes all the time here in ALFA for the sake of RP and adherance to D&D. We make an effort to abide by D&D 3.5 edition ruleset. This is hard coded when possible and the effort:reward ratio is favorable. Other times there is simply an expectation for the player base to not abuse things that aren't D&D but happen ot be in the NWN2 engine.

I'm not saying the using the mini-map in an inapropriate manner is the equivalent of AI abuse or casting an invisibility spell that isn't 3.5, or carrying 2000 lbs of gear with your 40 lb halfling, but it's on the spectrum.

That is RPing it. You'd also look a bit silly when those 10 red dots turned out to be a herd of angry deer :P

I'm slighty confused about this radar thing now. Does every character get to see dots half way across the map and not just the Survival/Tracking types?

Everybody gets a shot, yes - Survival doesn't need to be trained. The "dots" only show up (relatively) nearby, and may vanish when obstructed by the environment or moving out of range. They cannot be targeted unless also spotted.

For low-survival PCs, it's too unreliable for serious use. High-survival PCs without Track have use for it, but can end up horribly surprised by monsters that do not show without the Track feat.

The Detect Undead spell and Detect Spirits SLA add yellow dots, from very far away.

There is also an engine bug that occasionally gives a character with very low (untrained) survival skill long-range godlike monster radar. Naturally, should you notice this happening without significant investment in Survival, this is DEFINITELY OOC and should not be acted upon.

Could this be fixed, maybe by making sure no-one leaves the OOC area with a negative Survival-rating? I've encountered a lot of new PCs who seem to be using/abusing or unaware of the bug.

That would be hard to enforce, as any PC with a 8 wisdom and no training in Survival would have a negative Survival score.
Current PCs:
Zova Earth Breaker, Monk of Rasheman
Alyra Ashedown, Knight Commander of Silverymoon

We might be able to assign anyone with a negative modifier a few "free ranks" to put them up to 0, and reevaluate the free ranks OnLevelUp to account for loss of the penalties through stat improvement or Survival investment. Might end up penalizing the odd low-WIS character (rogue, barbarian?) who wants to start investing in Survival during level advancement.

Not the most elegant solution, but it would address the problem.
