On a server I played on "special races" such as Tiefling and genasi were playable by Staff invitiation only. Basically staff members could nominate a player who had consitently exhibited quality, responsible RP to play a special race. The player was extended the invitation, and then if they accepted had to submit a bio for DM approval. This system worked very well IMO, and could be effective here as a "reward" for a player who say retires a particulary influential high level PC that has contributed to everyone else's experience -- or simply for quality, above average RP. I think this is important because with playing a special race comes special responsibilities in terms of lore and RP IMO.

There was an outcry at one point to "open things up" to special races. A "trial period" was held where people could roll any special race they wanted. Needless to say you had a lot of tiefers walking around and it got a little ridiculous -- well alot ridulous actually with much CvC followed by OOC issues that took up a lot of staff time. Immersion was also ruined to a certain extent by having a town full of tieflings when they should be rare I think. The invitation process in contrast offers a good system for staff control over "special" races. It also allows you to address appearance and "disguise" issues I think. I am cluless on the toolset, but we had builders who could whip up a special race PC complete with a thigamajig OOC tool (or item) to give them a disguise in a jiffy =).

So my question is: Would you consider an invitation only system for special races? If not please explain why and how you would address an overabundance of such races which IMO could ruin immersion quite a bit.

Invitation system unlikely. HDM approval on the server with perhaps a recommended cap on the number of each planetouched type on the server decided by the HDM based on their region's history.

Question 1. Are you a munchkin?

Question 2. Have you ever been a munchkin?

Question 3. Do you support munchkins in their munchkinnism?

Question 4. What would twelve munchkin tieflings do in a bar if a thirteenth walked in?

Question 5. Do you think players that will only play a teifling are munchkins?

Question 6. Is one of your parents a munchkin, or half munchkin?

That is all.

I make effective builds, but I don't min max, so I would say no.
Question 2. Have you ever been a munchkin?
No.
Question 3. Do you support munchkins in their munchkinnism?
No.
Question 4. What would twelve munchkin tieflings do in a bar if a thirteenth walked in?
Form a Cabal.
Question 5. Do you think players that will only play a teifling are munchkins?
No. Tiefling doesn't have that great abilities. Decent but nothing that great with the ecl penalty.
Question 6. Is one of your parents a munchkin, or half munchkin?
As my parents and entire village were slayed by orcs when I was a young boy(i hid under my parent's corpses), and now my entire life is devoted to wiping out all orcs and humanoids, justifying my slaughter of them when they constantly return to the same place, I can not answer because I never knew my parents.
That is all.
I somehow doubt that.

Do you believe having such conflict and animosity within the Admin team will help to push ALFA forward and make us better?

Do you think the opening up the standards forum to be viewable by all members and compelling the team to listen to suggestions from anyone who makes them will improve the way standards are done? Do you think the signal to noise ratio will go up, down, or sit about the same?

Do you believe the standards team has been so terrible it needs to be gutted and filled with people that already have alot on their plates (namely the Admin)? Does not using Admin representatives just (essentially) give us much the same as what we have now?

The animosity is already there, Rusty is the one causing it. Cause last I checked I haven't made anyone leave ALFA.

The community should have a say in what kind of standards we adopt, and be given the chance to make suggestions and such. Final decisions will remain in the hand of the standards team. I think the signal to noise ration will stay the same, it will simply happen that the noise occurs before the changes are implement until after when someone realizes whats up in game.

I don't think it's been terrible, but it does need change. And using Admin Reps if that is what the admin wants instead of participating directly, does not make it much as the same, because both the players and the dms will have had a chosen representative within the standards team.

Vendrin - Why would you want to leave final decisions in the hands of the Standards team instead of having them submit the changes for approval by Admin? This would seem an appropriate check to prevent the team from doing whatever they want. Diversifying the membership helps, but ultimately shouldn't the Admins and/or HDMs have a say in approval?

That did not actually answer the question.

Having answered the same question Swift, I was not sure what you really meant.

"Do you believe having such conflict and animosity within the Admin team will help to push ALFA forward and make us better?"

What do you mean by that? That the changes suggested will cause it or are you referring to the existing tension (example half of the Admin just tried to recall Rusty and the other half really thought about it? Including Wynna?)

I doubt Vendrin was trying to dodge the question and neither was I. Could you elaborate?
