Which do you prefer as a player?

Increase density by allowing "dead" servers to be removed from live, and put back to beta at the discretion of admin. Note this could include servers with a few active campaigns, even ones your PC participates in.

Increase density by controlling the number of servers allowed to be live. Once live, servers would not be removed, even if "dead", and their spots could not be taken by other servers while they remained live.

A combination of the first two choices, which allows a maximum number of servers, but servers deemed "dead" by admin can only be removed if they are to be replaced by a server in beta.

Just provide a clear-and-present system to match players and DMs by timezones and playstyles, for both new and existing PCs. This includes giving existing PCs IC reasons to travel, if need be.

There is a definate concern that if you give DMs a target along the lines of "get folks on your server or we'll shut it down" is going to result in DMs doing whatever it takes to get people onto their server, wether or not it meets the "spirit" of the PW we are trying to create here.

Whilst we like to call ourselves a roleplay intensive community, there are plenty of rumours around currently that suggest certain servers are the place to go for phat lewt and lots of static combat XP.

If those type of servers are teh ones that start attracting players, we might end up in a "survival of the fitest" situation, where each server gets incrementally more generous and powergamey than its neighbours in order to stave off the axe.

And the servers that resist, and keep the rewards low and the RP high might well be the ones that end up being deemed least fit and dying off.

If you are going to put any kind of "succeed or die" rule in place for servers, you need to be *very* careful about how you define that success, and how the supposed standards of ALFA are adhered to, or you might force an evolutionary growth spurt in a direction you really don't want to go.

Also it should be kept in mind that shutting down servers with low or no player bases will have only a negligible effect on player density. If you shut down an empty server you aren't actually shifting the population of active players around at all, the servers already empty or near enough so that it doesn't matter. Empty/dead servers are a drain on the HDM financially and perhaps creatively but if no one is using the server its not a drain on players.

I dont know how many times its been said, so im going to guess 42. This is time number 43. It doesnt work as well in real life as it does in your mind.
