now that right there.... would be cool as hell. But based on what we've seen, it'd require a whole bunch of custom models and whatnot... probably better to just go with sci fi?

Been followingt this for a couple months now along with friends from an old freelancer Group..one good thing as of a couple days ago they had well over 6 milli8on in funding..a little over two million was from Kickstarter..the rest from individual donations..Chris Roberts plan is to develop and relase without a publisher.

Okay, I have to say the death system in this game sounds amazingly awesome. Yes, there is perma-death:

I really hope they can pull it off.

The timing of this post is perhaps a bit sureal for me.
Just finished watching the firefly series on netflix and got a bug to play something like privateer so I was looking online to see what is out there currently. Decide to check the alfa forums and what do I find?
Rumple's crystal ball has an impressive range indeed if he has been scrying lately.

I am cautiously optimistic. Even if there is no DM client, if there is a way to modify and exert some measure of control over "our" world it would still be workable.
He is promising a huge, huge amount for the game, though and despite his being the biggest kick starter campaign so far (along with a bunch more from his own website) it is a lot of game for less than a triple A title costs.

A good 90% of a AAA games budget goes into marketing by a lot of devs own admission. Considering how word of mouthy this game is being thus far, marketing is going to have a lot less impact on most kickstarters.Swift wrote:I am cautiously optimistic. Re: A galaxy far away, the future of ALFA?
That depends entirely on the size of the publisher in most cases. Companies like EA and Activision have dedicated marketing departments who are paid outside of the game budgets. That ratio also does not make sense for most games. For an extreme example, it was estimated that GTA 4 cost around $100 million to make. I cannot see how the game was made for $10 million and the rest was spent on marketing and PR.
Most AAA games from the big publishers have budgets north of 20 to 30 million. Are these games truly being made for 2 to 3 million? I don't buy it, especially when kick starters that get that amount have been, by and large, much smaller teams than what the big studios use.
