So If I wanted to buy a server....

Post by CloudDancing »

So I just discovered that my town is a major hub for government surplus and they currently are selling three servers online PLUS what they have on site.

If I were to buy one, what would/should I be looking for to host?

http://www.publicsurplus.com/sms/auctio ... auc=572853
Server, Dell PowerVault 220S, 1.8 TB

(plus this website rocks if you live in TX, AZ, MN, VA and a few other states)

It's at 100.00 now but there are two more for 41 and 29 dollars.

I know you did not ask, but, I would be so more than happy to PayPal you 50% of whatever you plan to pay/buy for a or several of those servers you're interested in (assuming you are interested in getting them for at least partial use for ALFA of course).

If you go for it, let me know, and/or however you would like to receive the donation.

Just please take monthly pics of the little guy(s) to show me how they're doing to make sure i'm confident my donation has allowed them to have a better life, books, medicine, food, new clothing etc.

Oh no no..no money is needed, I just wondered IF they were worth purchasing at such a cheap price.

I appreciate the thought though and i'd save the funds for exisiting Alfa servers that are currently providing content vs. my pipe dreams?

I don't know anything about servers--- but same as Holly -

I'd pay some for purchase/upkeep if the tech people think it's a good move.

As they're about 10 years old I'd have my doubts as to the reliability of the hardware.

The cpu/memory aren't listed either (though I assume they're fairly decent), but I suppose it would work, you'd still have to figure out some way to host windows on it.
People talk of bestial cruelty, but that's a great injustice and insult to the beasts; a beast can never be so cruel as man, so artistically cruel.

Hi Cloud,

See http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/pr ... n/scsi.pdf

PowerEdge are the Dell servers.

The PowerVault is designed to either upgrade HDD space or cluster 2 PowerEdges together. The reason they don't know the CPU/memory is because it probably doesn't have any.

Regalis is right - those are technically hard drive expansiuons for servers.

Hostigng specs can be found in the tech forum someplace....

I will add the most important thing about hosting is the internet upload speed you have...this is why i do not host MS..I was going to buy a server for it, but my cable company connection sucks...so before you go shopping, make sure to check with other hosting people about what the proper connect speeds are.

If you are doign this for your own project and want to use a local vault you may not need as much speed...based on my experience my connection was fine for the module until we got on the vault.
