Weekly Game Play

Post by Rotku »

[Edit]Gah. Post turned out rambly. Copied the summary up here, so people don't have to wade through my verbal diarrhoea.
Summary
So, there we have it. Three problems, two solutions, one offer and one request. to sum up:

Problem 1 and 3: Time is short
Problem 2: I like DMed play better than non-DMed play
Solution 1/Offer: I will DM a once-per-week campaign slot, if people are interested
Solution 2/Request However, in order to do this, I will need to know someone can take over when I leave, so am hoping someone will be willing to co-DM.

If you are interested, in playing or DMing, please chime in below somewhere!

Was trying to think up a name for this thread. Ideas ranged from Rotku's Unintelligible Ramblings to some smart play on the words in Pink Floyd's Time song, but decided to go with something sharp and to the point.

Anyway, I have a problem. Or three problems. To which I have two solution and one offer and one request. Let me start at the beginning.

Time. Free time for me is short at the moment (Problem 1). It's hard to find enough time in the week for me to sit down and play any game for longer than an hour or so without interruption of one sort or another. This has meant time to play ALFA is limited - it's impossible to get involved in a story when you only have an hour here or an hour there, or can only get on once a week. Things tend to progress without you. I am sure there are many others who are in the same boat as me.

My second problem is that I have found the bit I enjoy best about RPing is the story - I love playing my character while the story unfolds. If I want to explore dungeons or hack apart hordes of monsters I can crack out Dragon Age. If I want to sit in a tavern chatting I can go to a social server. Not that these aren't very valid means (and enjoyable) of playing, just when one has limited time it's nice to have a bit more of what they value highly. Anyway, long story short is that this horrible preference of mine requires having a DM, and ALFA is (as always) very short of DMs (Problem 2). Which leads me to my first solution and my offer.

Rotku's Offer
If there is anyone who is looking for a (initially) low-level adventure, playing once a week*, I am willing to take up the wand. The game will be a short campaign focus, with the group ideally of a suitable niche. As we'll only be playing once a week, it means that the story won't unfold when you can't log in every night of the week, so you won't come back to find the entire plot changed over night. We can discuss when to play, what to play and where to play. I've got my preferences, but am flexible.

*of course, you can play more, but this story will only advance once a week.

However, there is a catch. Going back to the whole "I don't have much time" issue. Come late Jan, next year (18/1 I think) my free time is going to disappear even further. Hence I cannot commit to DMing a campaign (Problem 3). So why do I make my above offer? Well, what I am hoping is that there is someone out there who may be interested in learning the ropes of DMing. For the first couple of months we can co-DM - working on the story, running the game, torturing the PCs and so forth - while I show them the way around the client (and ALFA). Then come mid-Jan, I can step aside and they can run the show. So my second solution and my request is.

Rotku's Request
Is there anyone who is willing to co-run a weekly game with me? Prior DMing experience is not required - this is a learn-as-you-go type project!

Rotku, I'm a bit confused here, how is you DMing once a week and then stopping in less than 2 months going to help you to be able to play? It sounds like what you are offering is to just get your feet wet in the DM client for a minute to train someone in the basics (because tbh you can't really teach someone how to be a DM in 2 months, best you're going to do is teach them the rudimentary mechanics). If all you want to do is help someone learn how to DM there are a few new DMs who would probably be grateful if you stepped in and scheduled something weekly with them.

Two months is more than enough time to get a handle on the client. If one of the newer DMs wants to jump in and team up to DM for a bit, I'm more than happy with that. It also gives me two months to enjoy helping to develop and see the story unfold. And a chance for those who are in a similar situation as me, who can't play your style of here-and-there DMing, to have an opportunity to get some love.

Hey Rot, I'm almost definitely too 'high level' for what you have in mind, however my play times are very limited these days and DM time is very hard to come by for Euro's in general (though Viigas is doing a couple of hours whenever he can with Keryn and I which is incredibly good of him!)

If there'd be a space for myself to join in I'd be interested, I'd offer with DMing but because of the limited time and TSM being the server I play on I sadly can't :(

These Days the 'here-and-there DMing' just doesn't work for me, I never know when somethings going on till too late, and even when i do hear about it, it's usually out of my timezone anyways.
