Looking for Project Team/Lead: In-Game Alfa Core Rule Book

Post by CloudDancing »

Hi,

On another server I have experienced a very nice system. As part of your first log in, a player recieves a series of four quest updates to your journal.

Contained within is the tabbed core rules of the server, a detailed explination of crafting instructions, and a description of the dispute process and sample of the type of disputes that might occur with which admin to contact.

So due to my busy schedule I am propose that someone might take this as a small learning project to build static quests/journal entries.

As per the delivery, it can be linked to a NPC in the start area that can be consulted and the rulesbook "quest/journal entry" passed over much like the adjustment NPC for old characters.

Great idea!

We already have alot of these things written out on the forums or in our drupal system. Could be as simple as just copy+pasting significant bits.
People talk of bestial cruelty, but that's a great injustice and insult to the beasts; a beast can never be so cruel as man, so artistically cruel.

Aren't they in the character selection screen for people to read when downloading the haks?

To be honest, I'd rather not have them listed with my quests.

Quoted for emphasis. We also have them on the website.

For the players that play regularly and solo w/o Dms to consult on their rules related issues, this is a good idea for two reasons:

1. There is no "I did'nt know the rules."
Example: I would like to include examples in the rules "like player a ask player b to meta game to find their dead body, this is cheating." I know spelling it out seems rudimentary but I also feel it is needed to the point of wanting new player orientation sessions.

2. We don't use our quest journals in Alfa. The only content i've seen with journal updates is Wynna's statics and the few TSM statics. Then once those are done, there is nothing..zip..nada.

1. There is no "I didn't know the rules" now. The information is well documented, and players are expected to have reviewed it.

2. I don't see the big deal in adding something to the journal, but this seems like making unnecessary work for someone. Personally I'd rather see people contributing in ways that bring more life to the servers- playing, DMing, building.

Could always put it on a big pillar in the OOC start-areas instead.
The power of concealment lies in revelation.

have a scroll with the rules and have a pillar for each of our pillars in the starting area, that might be cool.

Do extra things in a journal "bloat" a bic? Especially if you threw like, a novel in there?

I know that'd be the case if you gave an OOC inventory item that was simply an examinable mountain of text.

It would be less the case though if it was a way to initiate a conversation sort of with... well, yourself, but the convo being like an OOC FAQ where really, the conversation files are part of the module. It's just that instead of talking to an NPC, you're talking to a "OOC BOOK OF FAQs" in your inventory, or it's just an added dialogue option on any existing tools or widgets.

I can see the "utility" in the idea by Cloud, I guess I just wonder after efficiencies.

The ACR Quest system uses the "Journal" extensively - nearly all of TSM's scripted quests (of which there are many) make use of it, as, presumably, will statics quests on other servers once they're configured.

That said, if we give new players a way to "complete" the quest so it moves out of the active area, I can't imagine it would be too obtrusive.
