Role-playing faux pas

Re: Role-playing faux pas
Well, I was going to let this thread go by without stirring anything up, but now I can't.
A furrowed brow describes a facial expression that could mean any of a number of things. Folks do it in RL all the time and you don't always know what the trouble is. It is actually intended to provoke thoughts in surrounding PCs when RPing, unlike in RL when there is no such intention. Sometimes people are thoughtful, sometimes angry, sometimes they are fighting some wicked gas and sometimes that is just how they carry their faces around and it doesn't mean anything in particular. For me, using the emote is a way to relay that a something has caused a change in my PC. Not everyone is going to care about the change, or even notice.
"Looks thoughtful" is about as helpful as "looks hungry" IMO (although "looks horny" is a more appropos example for TSM.)
Insult it if you like. Look to other PCs upon whom to bestow your DM blessings if you like. I will continue emoting it. Respond as you will.

Well it's a pet peeve of mine, whether anyone likes it or not. I was not refering to anyone specific in ALFA when complaining because I have actually rarely seen it here.

I think the issue came when you made it personal over a pet peeve after saying "this is advice for becoming a better roleplayer."Malacand wrote:![]()

Anyway, the original post said to please stick to your own pet peeves and to remember it's your own opinion -- in other words, what you say shouldn't be law, and what others say shouldn't cause too many issues (yes, I'm guilty of it in this thread).

I dunno... furrowing of brows are usually accompanied by other expressions to give a better idea of whether a person is thoughful, angry or bemused. Tightening of lips, raising on an eyebrow etc.
NEW ALFA RULE: Whenever a PC emotes, anyone within listening distance must make an opposing sense motive vs bluff roll to determine what the character is thinking.

Re: Role-playing faux pas
It is advice and if people want to take it personal when I didn't name anyone other than generally saying I've experienced it on all servers I've been on, thats their problem. Let me put it in context. I was rping on a NWN1 server called the Wheel of Time The Third Age back in 05. This emote was used so much I could predict when other PC's were going to use it and it became extremely boring rping with them, I started to ignore the emote. The advice would be to not emote the same super short emote over and over unless it's part of the characters personality, lets say if they had a twitch or something, but thats completely different then looking like the PC constantly has something stuck up their rear. If people don't want to take it as advice thats fine. But you can see how I grew into having this pet peeve of mine.Magile wrote: I think the issue came when you made it personal over a pet peeve after saying "this is advice for becoming a better roleplayer."
I'm sorry if my being brutally honest about my opinion offends anyone but thats just the way it is. And Mick, consider that I'm fairly new here and don't have any experience RPing with you and Alacrity other than that one orc event and I don't think I seen any "brow furrows". Whatever knowledge you think I have of your roleplaying I don't. So this:
Is unwarranted. My pet peeve doesn't affect the way I treat or will treat any PC's because I understand it's my problem. If you don't agree with me leave it at that. I'm simply being brutally honest about my petty pet peeve and that is all. We'll just have to agree to disagree on it.Mick wrote: Look to other PCs upon whom to bestow your DM blessings if you like.

Re: Role-playing faux pas
Malacand,
The feedback you are getting is not so much taking you to task for your pet peeve. As magile has said, it was when you equated your pet peeve with inherently weaker RP that the pushback came, and the predictable implication of that statement is that you would judge others by their use of the relevant emotes. It appears that is not what you meant, but that is where the conversation went awry.

I should have thought about that when I posted but I spaced out.
I apologize for the misunderstanding.
