NWCitadel IS Interested in This!

Post by dunniteowl »

Hey--oh~!

Yes, the NWCitadel bunch in the Forgotten Realms Weave is still quite interested in collaborating with ALFA in WD.

While the objectives of the FRW+DMFI:Waterdeep Project is still different in overall scope than the ALFA's WD efforts, there is much room for collaboration.

Unfortunately, through some unknown issue, we are down and out for the count (hopefully it's just an 8 count and not a TKO) and the site is currently offline. Meanwhile, I would truly appreciate hearing (reading) more about this mapmaking process. It is astonishing what you have accomplished and I am most impressed.

Additionally, the FRW wasn't planning on building the entire city, just short module areas for use as either one-off adventure session areas for MP/DM or to incorporate into SP/CM (Community Modules) or for PW incorporation. So we are at one and the same time dealing with issues of scope and scale, though the resultant output of building areas is still extremely compatible.

I love the process you are using to make the maps, even though I don't have the tools you do. I would be most interested in seeing your 'published' process over at the NWN2 forums. I suppose it would be under either Toolset or Custom Content, yes?

As many of you may know, I am also a moderator over there *(NWN2 Forums) and would appreciate a heads up when this is posted to BioSidian's site forums there. Also, I believe this sort of work (Indio's map making) is worthy of inclusion into Rob's blog as a small Community boon to show people what's possible when you do instead of talk (like me.)

So, please, keep up the efforts to create WD.

And Grand Fromage, I think, with all the patch changes, you really should revisit your areas and check them out.

I don't know how 'up' you folks are on the blogging in the Obsidian Site, either. Rob's latest indicates the player limit on a server is going to be upped to 120+ and they are also going to be working on resolving transition crashes and a portalling system.

All very good news to a place like ALFA.

my best regards,
dunniteowl

I'll PM you with the thread once I've written it down mate. Still got to write it yet.

edit: And I was referring out ALFAs NWN2 forum, being the parochial redneck that I am.

It's rather exciting to consider that so many of the canon cities and towns could be built in this way. Wouldn't it be nice to have a catalogue of destinations to choose from when putting together a campaign.

Thats the plan, Stan. :)

Indio if you wish I can help you put together a tutorial. Don't know what I can do except edit and you're probably much better with spelling & grammar than me. :)

If you can think of a way I can assist, please feel free to let me know..

[edited for spelling and grammar.. :)]

There's draft 1 of the process.

If someone tries following it then maybe they could tell me where it needs work.

alas, there is no point in me following this as I know how to do it.. someone new to this process could give better feedback on ease of use.

I will say, it might pay to tell people that on heightmap scaling for images you can add your number of walkable megatiles +4 for the buffer megatiles multiply the total number of megatiles x24 and add 1 and you have your total (dont know why you add 1 you just do).

For texturemaps you take your total number of megatiles and multiply by 128 (no need to add 1 to this total, I still dont know why)..

I dont know how you can make that easier for people to understand but that concept really helped me..

I haven't tried this method yet so I'll give it a try tonight and see how I make out with the guide.

That's absolutely amazing Indio! These visuals have me somewhere between shocked disbelief and screaming uncontrollably... :D

And no worries amigo, when you churn out work like this, I'd hardly call it stepping on toes. You're doing everything we had intended on doing and more. Please carry on.

I'm with dunniteowl on the desire to publicize this. Please let us know when the guide is finished and we can release it on the Vault and I can do some PR over it on various boards.

In the meantime, can I splash your WD screenshots over at the Skullport PW?
Enjoy the game

Draft 1 of the guide is linked above, and I'll plug any holes as they arise. Additionally, if someone with a publishing eye wants to refine the guide, as it's currently pretty rough, let's make it an ALFA document that properly reflects what we're about. I'll leave that to someone who can produce such a document of course, but will gladly oversee the techhnical and procedural content.

And you always have permission to publish screens of mine wherever you like. I'd appreciate it though if it was simply referred to as ALFA content.
