Notices arrive in Baldur's Gate from Amn that offer 5 ducats each for gnoll heads, to be redeemed at the watch post in Nashkel.

Perhaps I can shoot two orcs with one arrow... if I can discover some clue as to the origin of these gnolls while I resume my search for Laniara's things...

Aglaril slipped some silver pieces to the barkeep at the Jovial Juggler, while handing him another posting:

Gnolls have been rumored to be active in the Wood of Sharp Teeth. A reward of 100 double eagles is offered for information of substance concerning their activities and point of origination. The reward will be doubled to 200 if verifiable information that concerns the fate of an Elf maiden's belongings is discovered.

Be warned; the Wood of Sharp Teeth is an extremely deadly place known to be inhabited by evil humanoids, wyverns, ogres, life draining undead, and somewhere deep in the wood, dragons.

Leave word with the barkeep at the Jovial Juggler in Beregost

The posting is left unsigned.

*The blood-curdling shrieks of fel gnolls echo through the valleys and forests. Half whispered tales of flaming fiends spread among taverns and ale houses.*

(( This staged encounter is only for higher level PC parties.
You've been warned. ))
At sunset, three seasoned adventurers were seen venturing into to the depths of sharp teeth forest. The group emerged back to the main road later on that night, carrying the severed head of a demon-like horned creature.

*Persistent threats along the Trade Way have slowed wagon-drawn traffic along the Sword Coast. The port of Baldur's Gate now bustles with activity and is frequently at maximum capacity. There is an increase in reports of crime along the docks, and dark rumors.

News from Nashkel is that a battalion of the Amn Army proper has arrived in the town. The local garrison lost significant numbers clearing the roads and is back up to strength. Few caravans travel that way now, as armed soldiers and mercenaries join foul creatures as the new residents upon the Trade Way.*

The issues seem to affect the 'little people/things' as a halfling wonders back into Balders Gate. She has a tense conversation with the post office.

"Sorry, I lost the mail back going to Nashkal due to the presence of Gnolls. There was a lot of blood, and it had to be abandoned... until I can get a body guard, I'll not be able to carry anything south. Sorry."

With the halfling out of a job, she wonders around for something else to make coin.

In Beregost, a number of horses have become ill. At least three riders who had stopped in Beregost for the evening had their horses come up blind two days later. One owner, a man by the name of Dean Ellison, an agent with the Baldur's gate merchants guild, has vowed to get the bottom of the illness that has come over his prized horse, and offers a reward to anyone with information as to how this happened or to anyone that can remedy the illness.

*Caravan travel nearly comes to a halt, with only a few making their way south from Baldur's Gate. Mail is no longer being sent to Nashkel by foot. Bloodied Amnish patrols now force their way as far north as Beregost in an attempt to reopen the Trade Way. All travelers are warned to avoid the road south of Beregost unless accompanied by well armed body guards.*

(( Even though the scripted static quest in game is unchanged, it is no longer IC to deliver mail from BG to Nashkel. Also, if you notice a Caravaneer NPC is missing, this is intentional and do not ask a DM to replace him. Do not take the caravans between Beregost and Nashkel, even if the NPC is there. Please pass the word in game for those who don't read the forums. ))

TRADE NEWS OF BEREGOST: As peak of winter passes, much of the grain and food stores in Beregost as well as that of Gullykin are becoming exhausted. As the spring arrives and the cloudspeak pass begins to open up, many expect the once needed spring shipment of grain and new horses to aid in farming from Amn to be delayed. If nothing is done soon to break the gnoll hordes, the long hold on the trade lines that the gnolls have had will place the town in jeopardy to feed its people this season as the spring shipments may be blocked. The effects lasting well into the next year if crops are not planted soon. With the patrols from Amn slowing the forces of Beregost are hard pressed to both protect the townspeople from any invasion of gnolls, and keep the trade route open. Rumors say that forces out of Gullykin have aided in dispatching some gnoll forces to the roads in the south, but the effects of the efforts remain to be seen.

Baldur's gate has pledged to support Beregost and has begun sending silver and gold north to Waterdeep in hopes of having grains and food items sent south. But two things worry Beregost officials, the increased bandit and goblin activity to the road north and the price of grains and food items from Waterdeep that may not survive the journey south. Local farms are preparing the best they can, and luckily have not been hit hard by gnoll raids, but farmers are wondering if the gnolls themselves aren't on the verge of needing food as well....

The division of troops from Amn has finally made it's presence known in the regions south of Beregost. The road is now well patrolled, and gnoll attacks are much reduced. Many goods now flow across the Trade Way once more, and the frenzy of seagoing traffic has returned to it's normal pace.

(( Feel free to travel south to Nashkel with less fear and trepidation. Also, feel free to deliver the mail to Nashkel once more, now that the road is clear.))

With the break of spring, and safer roads comes welcomed and much needed supplies from the south. A slow and tentative stream of caravans begin to arrive in Beregost and the farms surrounding Baldur's Gate. Livestock, farm tools, and seedlings are traded almost as fast as they arrive. Caravan guards are still watchful and there is the occasional brave or foolish gnoll that must be dealt with in the surrounding woodlands. When asked, guards or other travelers mention the threat of bandits over worries of the once seemingly overpowering gnoll threat. One such traveler from Nashkell said:

"Our Amnish armies lost a good bit of men, but I thought there was going to be a much tougher fight. I was worried those gnolls would retaliate and take revenge on Nashkell itself. I'm just glad I can visit with my family again, this spring, here in Beregost."

In BG proper, citizens also worry about a possible influx of thieves and bandits with the spring trade. With some of the cities resources cut off by the death of two well established mining owners (some may recall a viscous attack on the city bath house by a deadly vampiress where the two men were killed), as well as supplies of gold and silver being used to shore up the past few months of trade, not only in the city but also surrounding areas as far as Beregost, there seems less of a presence from the city watch as well as the Flaming Fist. A spokesman from the castle of Duke Belt was quoted as saying:

"We have lessened the number of Flaming Fist in and near the city as planned as part of operations outside of the BG area. We are in no way less capable of defending the city, nor policing the area, and our best troops and finest officers remain vigilant to threats in and around the city.

*Though subdued, the gnolls are no where near defeated. They are confined to their tribal haunts by the vigilance of the Amnish Army in Nashkel. There they forage and brood and still make an occasional foray upon the Trade Way. All who pass by hear their howls, and none have hazarded the dangers of their stronghold.*
