Sword and scale

Post by Dorn »

((IC only thread, organising in other place))

Richards cloak billowed with the bitter winds howling down the valleys from the black mountains beyond. The torches spat and gutted, shedding little light on the nights witching hour as he walked from the riverboat through the gate towards the Legion post.

A full moon had passed since he had attended his posting in Rivermoot. The rare times of rivalry between his duties to Legion, Church and House gnawed at him. It was fortunate Sgt Wilson was an understanding man permitting the leave.

To his relief, the riverboat captain had muttered that the Kobalds, at least, had yet to rise against the town again. It seems that their savage foray into the tunnels had well cowed the evil creatures for some time indeed.

He thought back to the morning he, Slate, Kert, Malmsey and Lawkeeper Ulrik had recounted the bloody events of that night and day spent beneath the mountains to the Sergeant. The sense of tired elation had slowly ebbed since then but was remembered. Such a goodly duty well done was its own prayer to Torm, but it was more than just that.

More indeed. His first offensive command had returned with success and largely in one piece. Pride cometh before a fall his grandfather had warned him, but he could not help some glow within. In hindsight, there was a score things he would have seen done differently on that mission. Indeed fireside discussion with gruff Slate had enlightened him further still, and prayer with Ulrik to the Triad helped him contemplate how better to bring order to the chaos of battle.

But that was not the end of it as all who had been in those tunnels knew. Did the Wyverns still rise or was the prophesy false? When would the seemingly innumerable Kobalds reply to their last defeat? And where in all of this did the Mad Gods treacherous minions grasp the puppet strings as he was now certain they did?

He returned the wave of the gate guardsmen as he rounded the inner palisade towards Legion tower. He had called on the avenues available to him to follow any loose ends. Both Legion and the Church of Torm were well aware that the Dark Sun had stepped from the shadow in the form of a one eyed man and that the good people of the marches were in that mans dark gaze. He hoped at least something had been learned in his absence.

Crunching the gravel towards the tower door he resolved to find and speak to those who aided him in the tunnels. Certainly most did the work for gold not honour or duty, but once committed all had done their tasks honestly and so very well that Torm would approve he was sure. The Legion could well do worse than continuing to use such an effective group.

About to open the door he looked down to the shapeless pile under a dark canvas by the door. Moving the material he gazed at the stack of horse sized draconic heads next to the door. So...the wyverns still rose....

The shuffling of feet caught the edge of Richards awareness, pulling him out of his prayer.

A familiar but nervous whisper behind made him smile slightly and he opened his eyes. He narrowed his eyes, not from the dull glow of the single remaining candle on the alter, but from the crack of bluewhite light beaming from the ajar door at the back of the chapel. It was dawn indeed.

The little boy and girl behind him froze wide eyes and abashed as he looked at them, but then grinned and ran over as he smiled and greeted realising he was not cross for the interruption. Both orphans of the lost Legionnaires his comrades had found in the spiders cave, they seem to have found some solace in helping the Lawkeeper in his chapel. Richard also spent as much time as his other duties allowed with these orphans of those lost doing their own duties. He hoped his words and gentle teachings had in some way lessened the loss they must feel.

He stood slowly from his knees. It was a long vigil from dusk to dawn spent half in silence and half in litany to The True and the Triad, and he had seen a priest fall before after rising too quickly.

He stretched as the children ran off to replace spent candles and . Although tired, his soul was full of energy. He thought on the letters written to the Golden Oak for Malmsy and Slate, to Lord Ra to see if Rothar was to be found, and the word in Rivermoot to find him Ulrik and Kert.

He hoped they would answer the summons and continue to aid the Legion in its work.

His first thought was to head north and see if they could take to the Wryverns, they were the immediate evil and the trigger for the Kobald attacks.

However he had a niggling feeling that this one eyed man threatened a greater evil to perhaps more than just the goodfolk of Rivermoot. He worried the seemingly unrelated increase in evils done throughout the valley may not be so unrelated afterall. Certainly his heart cried out to hunt down this dark man of Cyric and repay the Debt of Dereliction owed to all the good people of Faerun by Richards Church.

He himself would now take to horse and question the Legion outposts at Fourthpeak, Rivermoot, Highold and Quarrvar and of course Rhavinwatch about a 'one eyed man'. But perhaps another was needed to seek out hidden truths from others. He was not so naive as to expect all in this frontier lands to be loose lipped with a soldier of Torm.

When he returned he would talk it over with Wilson and those who came to Rivermoot as they may have turned up something in his absence.

A new meeting.....(decision highlighted)

Malmsy Woodrue: Sir Richard!
Malmsy Woodrue: Welcome to the Goldan Oak.
Richard du Lyones: *walks in a looks around, travel dust all over him. Smiles warmly when he sees Malmsy* Hello again!
Malmsy Woodrue: Can I get you anything? I work here part time, It'll be on me.
Richard du Lyones: Just the person I was looking for *nods* I remembered you did and so here i am.
Richard du Lyones: *licks dry lips* perhaps a wine...red if you please.
Richard du Lyones: And maybe some moments of your time when you have some free?
Malmsy Woodrue: I've got some bad news. Mister Slate is gone.
Malmsy Woodrue: Dead, is the word.
Richard du Lyones: *shoulders drop with his jaw* Slate is dead?! *incredulous*
Malmsy Woodrue: He was going somewhere dangerous, so he left me what we found in the caves. Yessir.
Richard du Lyones: *bows his head and rubs at his forehead*I can scarce believe...what a loss
Malmsy Woodrue: *her voice tight* I'll be gettin' yer wine

Keren Horn: *glance back to the man a raises a glass of wine in greeting*
Keren Horn: Good sir. *smiles*

Richard du Lyones: *sits on the end of the table and stares at the furthest table away from him, doesn’t seem to register Keren *
Keren Horn: *blinks shortly shrugs a bit still smiling and sips*
Malmsy Woodrue: *hands Richard his wine* You wanted to talk to me?

Jharyn: *studies richard curiously for a few moments, sipping wine* dont try the pie, its all for me *grins thinly*
Keren Horn: oh, it was perfect in my mind Jharyn: that reminds me, what was your name again and what do you do ?
Keren Horn: Eh?
Keren Horn: I didnt give a name.
Keren Horn: And I ... mostly drink wine. *smiles*
Keren Horn: I'm Keren. *nods slight for the elf*
Jharyn: ah a most honest profession
Keren Horn: Yes yes. I do try.
Jharyn: truth in wine ! and liquor or so im told
Keren Horn: business is slow tho.
Keren Horn: Not making much coin it seems.
Jharyn: but do stay away from that wyvern whisky that leads to blasphemy
Jharyn: do you have any boar killing skills?
Keren Horn: I... don't believeI heard about that one.
Keren Horn: Well... what?
Keren Horn: *blinks*
Keren Horn: No skills I would bet my life on, no.
Jharyn: shame
Keren Horn: You have some business with a boar?
Keren Horn: What did it do to you
Jharyn: not really, i must confess to entire pecuniary motiations
Keren Horn: Hmm...
Keren Horn: No. not worth it.
Jharyn: as there are two people with swine related problems i know off
Jharyn: hm thought so

Richard du Lyones: *looks down * Strange to feel so sad. *nods at the table opposite him* I remember him chastising me for my beliefs there...as he seemed to almost all the time. Still..... He was a good man behind the bluster twas clear
Malmsy Woodrue: *hands him a piece of pie* Made that myself
Malmsy Woodrue: I pray for him, it's all I can do really
Richard du Lyones: *nods* Prayer is all we can do for him now...
Malmsy Woodrue: *pulls out her bag and digs through it*
Richard du Lyones: *shakes head* I thoguht the man was unkillable. Torm guard the mans soul. He did much for others...even if he said he did it for himsef i believe.
Malmsy Woodrue: *hands Richard a book and small scroll*
Richard du Lyones: *takes the packet and flips through the scroll and book* Ah...from teh tunnel. I am glad he had the sense to leave these safe. *pats them*
Richard du Lyones: *takes a deep breath and raises his glass* To the memory of a strong soul and good man. *swigs at the wine*
Malmsy Woodrue: Sadly, I don't speak draconic, but my friend Itishi does. She's said she wants to help us.
Richard du Lyones: *cocks a head*Did you receive my letter?
Malmsy Woodrue: She's been hearing of wyvern attacks between High Hold and Rivermoot.
Malmsy Woodrue: No, I didn't
Richard du Lyones: *frowns then shrugs* No matter now i'm here. I would ask the company that went into the tunnels to aid the Legion again.
Richard du Lyones: *smiles sadly* But now the shield of that company is gone it seems
Malmsy Woodrue: I haven't seen any of the others in a while. If I see them I will tell them. I haven't been to Rivermoot in a while though.
Malmsy Woodrue: They may be there, after all thats the muster point, aye?
Malmsy Woodrue: I'll be right back

Richard du Lyones: *lapses into silence and bows his head murmuring a quiet litany and holding the token of Torm aorund his neck*
Richard du Lyones: *sets down his pack and travel cloak on the seat and wanders over to the other men*
Richard du Lyones: *inclines head* My apologies for ignoring your greeting Sir. I was...distracted by ill news.
Jharyn: greetings sir sir!
Jharyn: well i must worry about you then! ill news are the worst of distractions, i much prefer wine and women
Malmsy Woodrue: *picks up her now cold mug of cider and sips it*
Richard du Lyones: *looks to Jharyl for e moment then smiles* Indeed friend. My apologies for not introducing myself. I am Richard du Lyones of the Argent Legion
Keren Horn: *smiles back brightly*
Jharyn: aha! a man related to lions, must be because of the hair, or do you keep a harem? *grins thinly* i am jharyn
Keren Horn: The young hin speaks fondly of you Richard.
Keren Horn: Says you are doing good work with the troubles down at the Moot.
Keren Horn: I am Keren. *another great smile and a small bow of the head*
Keren Horn: *adds quick* And thats KEREN not Karen.... just to be clear, eh?
Jharyn: as you wish karen
Keren Horn: What can I say, Ma wanted a girl. *smiles*
Malmsy Woodrue: It's too bad Itishi isn't here.
Richard du Lyones: *blinks at the onslaught of words from jharyn and nods uncertainly* Ah....i...a harem? No, in truth i do not know why my house has it's name *snorts a laugh* perhaps i should!
Jharyn: no harm! stories and accounts of lineage are for old people anyways!
Richard du Lyones: *to Keren* Malmsy is a good soul and i am honoured she rememebrs me well *smiles to her* And my duty in Rivermoot is just that. No less could be asked of me. Have you been there of late?
Keren Horn: No... not in the past few month.
Malmsy Woodrue: I was about to travel that way to look for you Richard.
Jharyn: came from there a few days ago
Keren Horn: I heard the stories tho... *mouth twitch a bit* wish I could be of some help...
Jharyn: oh stories? you must tell!
Keren Horn: I must?
Keren Horn: I doubt it.
Keren Horn: But I will. tho either one of these two could tell more.
Jharyn: phew! be a spoilsport then
Keren Horn: Wyvern and kobolds it seems.
Keren Horn: Causing havok around the town and the farmlands.
Jharyn: ah thats regrettable
Richard du Lyones: *looks Keren over* How would you help good man? In the face of Wyverns and kobalds. *genuinely, not a challenge*
Keren Horn: *shrugs* as I said. wish I could.... cant help much. just a bit of knowledge of the land and some skills in tracking... and of beasts.
Keren Horn: But truly, I wont do you much good.... *faint smile* I must admit.
Keren Horn: Not when it comes to fighting at least.
Malmsy Woodrue: Tracking is helpful though.
Keren Horn: *nods slight with a shrug* Im no expert.
Malmsy Woodrue: Maybe Donovan would like to come. He said he was looking for honest work.
Malmsy Woodrue: He looked big and strong.
Jharyn: well if you need a chronicler or archer i can spare some time, i still got a few weeks before ill heroicly save a village beset by orcs
Keren Horn: *plays with his moustache a bit* Hardly equipped to handle wyverns from what I saw.
Richard du Lyones: *smiles gently* Do not disparage the skills you would have Sir. This is a frontier land. Why I could become turned around and die in the cold alone in the wilds.
Malmsy Woodrue: Or in caves.
Keren Horn: *chuckles a bit and shrugs* That would be damn shame Richard. and iresponsible of you.
Keren Horn: it seems you have work to do.
Keren Horn: Im pretty sure your commanders would frown on you dying. you might get demoted.
Richard du Lyones: *smiles to Jharyn* While it would be some thing to have ones deeds written into history I say again I do only my duty as to those who help *nods to malmsy* However.....
Keren Horn: Well... archers are always helpful.
Jharyn: well you would want to hae your example reach as many people as possible! utterly impossible for one man
Richard du Lyones: *rubs his chin* ....the company i had hoped to form is now....short on manpower. If you would aid the town for the sake of doing good i would welcome you gladly.
Richard du Lyones: *smiles slightly* And if for gold...then i am able to pay a modest retainer...
Richard du Lyones: ...for modest skills *winks to Keren*
Jharyn: well it does seem those people have it bad enough liing in the middle of a river
Keren Horn: *smiles and shrugs* Am if I do it for the sake of curiousty and adventure?
Keren Horn: and*
Jharyn: besides i bet jharyn wyernslayer is much more impressive than the jharyn the gnoll hamstringer, the goblin pulerizer
Richard du Lyones: *laughs gently* It is a touch muddy
Jharyn: or bandit bane
Jharyn: *padds his chin* your church should sponsor a group of banite banes by theway
Keren Horn: oh yes. *to jhayrn* Wyvern slayer is quite lovely.
Jharyn: sadly i fear only men with a first name starting with a b would need to apply
Keren Horn: *taps his foot lightly on the bench* I would see Rivermoot again I think...
Keren Horn: once I get the chance.
Richard du Lyones: *smile fades* I wil thank you to not jest on such things sir. The Tyrants slaves are no laughing matter.
Malmsy Woodrue: *frowns* Slaves?
Keren Horn: its just a name... *start then stops*
Richard du Lyones: No Sir. Even if unknowing, noone serves Bane with free will.
Richard du Lyones: *takes a beath and sighs* Am am sorry....an ill turn to a bright conversation
Keren Horn: *nods slight with a shrug* As you say.
Jharyn: if you loose your humor, thats just another victory for him and his ilk
Keren Horn: *seems disinterested in the whole banite matter*
Malmsy Woodrue: *sighs and looks into her cup*
Richard du Lyones: Well then Sirs. I had hoped to take the fight again to the wyverns and kobalds. But we have lost a strong man and impenetrable shield.
Keren Horn: *takes a short sip of wine*
Malmsy Woodrue: *nods biting her lip*
Keren Horn: well... guess you will need to count on your brains more now. *toothy smile* A lot less relaeble I hear.
Malmsy Woodrue: Careful is a good way to approach kobolds. Tricky lizards.
Jharyn: lizards? arent they dragonlings?
Jharyn: some far distant offspring that is
Richard du Lyones: Indeed. But given the...eloquence shall i say...shown at this table perhaps your brains will help us where brawn will no longer serve.
Keren Horn: Welll dragon and lizards are kin.
Malmsy Woodrue: Aye. Itishi is with us. She isn't a fighter either, but she knows Draconic.
Jharyn: hm, ha! then lets say if we kill a hundred kobolds thats nearly as good as slaying a dragon
Malmsy Woodrue: Also she just wants to help
Keren Horn: *nods* A fine lady she is.
Jharyn: *tapps his fingers against the table edge* well maybe that number is a little low
Malmsy Woodrue: What do wyverns count for then?
Richard du Lyones: *smiles broadly*It is heartening to see those willing to put themselves in danger on behalf of the fellow folk.
Jharyn: good musician, but i wouldnt mention dragons around her
Jharyn: she seemed oddly worried about stepping on one
Malmsy Woodrue: Oh, she might mean the bookwyrms in the Lady's College. She might have been looking for me.
Malmsy Woodrue: Even I'm worried about stepping on those
Jharyn: i told her the stories of the first dragonslayers, not sure she believed me
Richard du Lyones: *raises an eyebrow* A musician, chronicler and tracker. *mutters to himself* And so we search for one-eye
Keren Horn: *chuckles and shrugs* Guess the fighting falls on you knight.
Keren Horn: Or is it legioner?
Jharyn: hm, if that doesnt work so well, i think we have enough for a good stageplay!
Richard du Lyones: Corporal. I have not earned my spurs.
Jharyn: you of course would be the hero sir lion
Malmsy Woodrue: Donovan was looking for an honest place to sell his sword he said. Maybe he'd like to help
Richard du Lyones: *nods to malmsey* Lawkeeper Ulrik may have returned by then as well.
Jharyn: *padds his chin* wonder what he should not do
Malmsy Woodrue: Oh yes!
Malmsy Woodrue: I hope so.
Richard du Lyones: *frowns slightly*....and then there is Kert.....
Malmsy Woodrue: After the war many people went on trips. Hopefully they'll be coming back.
Malmsy Woodrue: What about Kert?
Keren Horn: *looks between them*
Richard du Lyones: Well while Slate was our shield , he was certanily our sword....a strange fellow however.
Richard du Lyones: Who knows how reliable...
Malmsy Woodrue: He was odd.
Jharyn: how?
Jharyn: endearing odd as in carrying around strange items and talking to himself
Jharyn: or weird worrying odd as in gathering trophies, poor hygine and humor
Richard du Lyones: Hard to say. Even in the darkest tunnels where the danger was highest....incessent jokes
Richard du Lyones: *looks slughtly put out*
Malmsy Woodrue: Like he'd gotten into the funny fungus.
Jharyn: *chuckles* whats funny fungus?
Malmsy Woodrue: My cousin tried to sell it. He came to a bad end though. Young.
Keren Horn: *smiles* Well.... *glances at J* I think you might half to suffer that even more this time Corporal...
Keren Horn: *have
Richard du Lyones: *follows his gaze then looks upwards* Two? Oh but you test your servant Torm.
Keren Horn: *raises a hand* Maybe three.... *faint smile*
Richard du Lyones: *smiles to jharyn* I jest of course good sir.
Jharyn: well dont be concerned about me
Keren Horn: Tho I make no promises.... I might be serious....
Jharyn: i am the paragon of discipline and professionalism when i need to be
Keren Horn: ah. so maybe back to one, corporal.
Keren Horn: worry not.
Jharyn: quiet like a shadow! sharp like a falcons sight! deadly as ...
Jharyn: *padds his chin* well you get the idea
Richard du Lyones: ...........indeed. *takes a deep breath*
Keren Horn: *chuckles and shrugs* We'll be fine corporal, with you to guide us with your many years of expiriance, righ?
Keren Horn: right*
Richard du Lyones: Between us all there ARE many years Keren. If i am worth any salt it will be all of theta expeience whic aids us sir.
Richard du Lyones: But now.
Keren Horn: *smiles brightly and nods*
Richard du Lyones: I take it you are both willing to aid to the Legion and folk of Rivermoot. And you will give service truly without deception?
Jharyn: well a little twistiing of events for story cohersion will be necessary when weare done
Keren Horn: *face becomes serious for a moment*
Keren Horn: *glances at Jh the to rich*
Richard du Lyones: *if a long suffering look was possible after knowing someone for 20minutes Richard would be giving J one now*
Keren Horn: I'll aid you corporal*
Keren Horn: heck. *shrugs* I'll aid my land.
Jharyn: as to a general principle, you may want to be more precise with what you are asking, will i aid? yes. will i do it only for conerns for their welfare? no and i would bet you a hundred coins nearly everyone who says yes is lying
Richard du Lyones: *to keren* Service given to those unasked...such warms My Lords heart Keren.
Malmsy Woodrue: Are we going to talk about lying again?
Richard du Lyones: *to Jharyn* I do so and o not 'lie' sir. But if you ask for payment....there is an equal share of loot taken on campaign. Malmsy will tell you it is generally not insignificant.
Malmsy Woodrue: *nods* Not at all.
Keren Horn: *looks between them and his mouth twitch a bit*
Malmsy Woodrue: It paid my tuition and a few classes.
Richard du Lyones: Malmsy, i have talked myself dry again. perhaps you could fill the gentlemen in on what has passed? Particularly about the one eyed man.
Jharyn: *waves his hand dismissively* whats is money, nice to have but not anything substantial
Jharyn: ill come along for the expierence, and of course proper material for later works
Richard du Lyones: *waves to liana and then hands her a gold coin with a smile..she goes off to the bar*
Malmsy Woodrue: Well, we know he was working with the kobold, and they the wyverns. But we found some some signs of something darker.
Malmsy Woodrue: What was the name, Richard?
Richard du Lyones: The kobald leader Jxersiz?
Malmsy Woodrue: No the god. I'm not up on all the human gods, but the name turned everyone pale
Richard du Lyones: Oh *face darkens* The Dark Sun....Cyric
Malmsy Woodrue: Aye. It's all connected somehow.
Malmsy Woodrue: We need to find more clues, is what we need.
Jharyn: *pulls up the book from his side, a feather from his hat and begins scribbling notes
Malmsy Woodrue: We defeated some nasty kobold, but he answers to this one eyed man.
Malmsy Woodrue: Right?
Keren Horn: *looks between the lot*
Richard du Lyones: *nod* This 'one-eye' seems to have convinced the kobald leadership to attack the valley in repayment for dominion after rivermoot is razed. The abode of the one-eyed man had the symbol of cycic in it.
Malmsy Woodrue: *nods*
Malmsy Woodrue: The wyvern attacks are increasing.
Malmsy Woodrue: Farmers snatched off their fields.
Malmsy Woodrue: *shakes her head*
Malmsy Woodrue: We need to get reports from High Hold and Rivermoot both.
Jharyn: about?
Malmsy Woodrue: Where they're striking from. Maybe theres a common point between.
Malmsy Woodrue: Makes sense, aye?
Jharyn: oh, noting points in a map, analysis ia grids good idea! should narrow down search spots
Richard du Lyones: *nods* If slate were alive i would say we go aftrh Wyvern nests. But sadly he is not here...so we will try to uncover this cyricists game. I fear the wryverns are only a small aprt of the evil they may be marshalling.
Richard du Lyones: *looks at the three of them* And uncovering hidden intents is perhaps a task perhaps the three of you are far more adept at than one such as I.

Malmsy Woodrue: Oh my.
Jharyn: well the cyricist probably isnt really one eyed
INdeed, perhaps Torm aided in this fortuitous meeting.
Richard du Lyones: *snorts* You're probably right Jharyn. I'd not even thought of that
Jharyn: well he could be a moron too
Richard du Lyones: Getting an army of Kobalds and wryverns to fight for you.....evil, but doesnt sound moronic
Jharyn: well then he likely has taken some measures to obscure his identity
Malmsy Woodrue: A point.
Jharyn: easiest is misleading about physical features like that
Malmsy Woodrue: Also, a lot of folks who fight in caves wear an eyepatch
Malmsy Woodrue: You cover one of your eyes with the patch before you light a torch
Jharyn: pretty safe to assume hes one of the regular travellers to the illage too, if indeed he has two eyes still
Jharyn: oh whys that?
Malmsy Woodrue: After you go in, if you can douse the torch, flip up the patch and fight with one eye already adjusted to the darkness
Keren Horn: Well... are you sure we are going to go in anywhere?
Jharyn: well you depth perception will be rather horrible
Malmsy Woodrue: I only prepared because a cave is where we went last time
Malmsy Woodrue: Could be going up to the hills this time, who knows? We follow where the clues take us
Keren Horn: *slight nod, pondering* seems a bit early to make plans.
Malmsy Woodrue: My point exactly
Keren Horn: I would however like to see the moot....
Malmsy Woodrue: We can go to High Hold and Rivermoot and see what folks are saying there. *nods*
Keren Horn: *looks between them* Maybe scout a bit.
Malmsy Woodrue: *nods* Thats how we found the lair last time, prior scouting.
Richard du Lyones: *nods* Indeed, and thats where we would have stopped last time if not for Malmsy.
Malmsy Woodrue: I did what I could
Malmsy Woodrue: Everyone did
Richard du Lyones: I have to visit the temple for some time. Maybe i'll catch you on the road to Rivermoot. I'll be there two moons hence at the latest.
Jharyn: *nods once* sweet laughter and light water
Malmsy Woodrue: Take care Richard.
Richard du Lyones: The journey will give us time to think. We can plan when we are all arrived in the Moot.
Malmsy Woodrue: *nods*
Keren Horn: *nods* Take care corporal.
Richard du Lyones: Torm bless you all and watch over you in your duties.

Richard walked towards the temple. The flock grew, the honour given those lost in duty in the war and otherwise was plain to everyone and more came. And even in his meagre sermons he saw the light shine from new eyes when he spoke of service given freely for fellow man and the armor such gave the soul when it was time to move from this material plane. In such a dangerous place as this frontier, what happens after one dies was never far from the thoughts of men and women.

The temple would need to grow, at least to a church. He hoped soon work may begin on it's renovation. Certainly during his last visit home he had made sure the promised assets were available as he has agreed with the Western Primarchs. Home. He wondered if that place of fond memories and terrible happenings was still such to him.

Duty. He chided himself quietly for not focussing on his own, daydreaming about the du Lyones estates.

The wryverns.

It was a good plan, as far as it went. Both Krren and malmsy were keen minds in their own ways.

Malmsy would study the prophesy with her friend both at the great library and the university. He hoped her friendship with the famed Olaf may gain some aid that otehrwise may not be 'wasted' on a student.

Keren would speak to the Priestess and those in the University to find the source of the berries. Rare they must be and there may be people that would not talk to one such as Richard that may know who would import such into the marches. Frowning, he considered that perhaps turning those criminals over to the authorities may prevent future problems such as this after they had provided the information needed.

As for him?

He would to Rauvinwatch to study the roles and see what he could learn of a certain former corrupt Legionaire. He also had written a note to his Castallean at ehe estate to see if there was anything to be found in the local are about a battle of some sort in 1761 near Triboar that involved the Legion. A long way from home certainly....

He hoped for a lead. He did not wish to cause more pain to the woman Lissia held at Rivermoot. however she knew of evils and must speak to prevent further being committed. What to do? In this he truly felt the balance Torm played between mighty Tyr and Illmater. It was no easy question to answer.

A lot of blood, a lot of trail dust, but were they any closer?

Richard wondered.

They had lost Lissia...no, 'Kiri' Hrafan had said her name was. They knew she had gone north from Fourthpeak, but where? Perhaps over the passes towards Wintersedge, or into a cave somewhere in the hills, or who knows where in the expanse which was the wilds.

They knew the Wyvern were unaturally large...the notches on his sword from the vertebrae of one were testament to that. But it seemed each expert simply confirmed what they knew about the creatures or sent them onto another. Would knowledge gained from a journey to the Winter Grove actually help them in preventing furtehr attacks? Or merely add to the collecitve knoweldge of this species that some seemed to interested in.

And the man 'one-eye', the trail of the long missing traitor Legionairre had disappeared along with Lissia. The only lead now his shamed and recluse father near Rauvinwatch. He resolved to go to the poor man.

It would all be a simple case if the east and western highlands were not cut off from each other if the reports of Frost Giants were accurate. He had seen the frailty of his strange little command all too readily during the attack of the Orcs and Wrights.

He looked around the men and women at the inn recovering from the trek. A strange command indeed.

Malmsy he knew well and relied on a lot. Eager, skilled and certainly fearless.
Same with the trying, yet exceptionally competent Kert. A life saving spearpoint.
Keren had thrown himself into the mission and was proving an able support in keeping people alive now Richard found himself at the front during battle more often. Also his mind was keen which was becoming more important than a sharpe blade as matters became more muddied.

But the rest...
Itishi, Jethir and the dark skinned swordswoman. Oh they had aided them certainly and Malmsy had vouched for them which gave him comfort. But they undoubtedly held mirriad talents and skills he knew nothing about and therefore had not utilised. The Red Knight faithful would not doubt chastise him for not preparing enough by understanding the talents and tools at the groups disposal......rightfully chastise him.

Certainly they were all far from heavy infantry, but all the more reason to use them well given a frontal approach was getting them nowhere fast.

"So", he bowed quickly to the ladies and then took a spare seat, "you now our objective. How best to seek it out? I would hear your thoughts as hopefully they will save us another pair of walking boots!"

Magic for Dummies

The last battle with the orcs got hairy, and orcy..waaay orcy. Kert thouhght he should get himself some more training in magic. Maybe that would keep the team from getting their asses handed to them any time soon.

The 2nd floor scribe overheard the following conversation, and wrote it down for it's own amusement.

OF SCRIBING

Itishi sat in the well lit under library of the Vault of Sages as few others went about their own research...a farmer come from the Hall of Records further researching a form of land claim, a paid researcher finding references to some form of creature called an ooze (likely the very thing Itishi had seen dwelling within the depths of the Fochlucan, from the description), the elven Wujen whom traveled with the well known scout Sywyn reading old dwarven texts with the aid of his magics. Itishi was becoming a familiar face within the Vault, and now a known contributer, having scribed a recently recovered prophesy dealing with wyverns from Dragontongue into the common tradetongue...though the actual voracity of the writing was still suspect. Beside her,on one of the many long benches of the Vault was another scribe dressed in fine white robes. She welcomed the help...he was comparing the original text to others in terms of how old the book found actually was, whilst she looked through a fine lense, comparing the writing within the book to that on a letter written in Draconic found around the same time. Was the book something to truely take seriously, written by a Diviner many years ago...or was it written recently with the aim of stirring up the local kobold tribes...perhaps as a diversion for so that the orcs were given appropriate time to mass whilst the attention was on the kobolds? She hoped to find the answer soon...perhaps the handwriting of the book, and of the letter, were one and the same...perhaps OneEye had written both.

He hudled against the corner of the watchtower

The bitter wind cut through cloak, plate armor, padding undershirt and flesh to seemingly chill his bones.

Till dawn he would stay, and then return to take his vigil over the remains of Rothar.

Till the break in the season-long storm until they would be able to take the passes into the Moonwood to seek the Druids however.

He chaffed at the unfinished duty before him.

He prayed he would be able to continue soon.
