Serapheena's Lament (Bandwidth Warning)

He wasn't coming back. She had seen the reports of the survivors, none of whom were as worthy of life as Cornelius Vihuel. But he wasn't coming back. Crying silently in his office lest any student see, her face wet and her nose red, she stared at his now blank mirror, trying to shut out the images, illusions only, conjured by the wiser heads to whom the survivors had reported. They thought themselves kind to allow her these figments while they debated over the ramifications and whether or not certain creatures the survivors claimed to have met in this time and elsewhen had ever existed. The Magi seemed consumed with the philosophy of it; the palace with the politics; the Legion with the militaristic. But for her, he wasn't coming back.
Her eyes welling over again, she spoke the word he had entrusted her with for so many years, the command to show what she wanted to see, the command to link to every divinatory device within the walls of Silverymoon and share with them what it showed. They had given her the imagery and no command to keep it to her heart. Curse the palace and the Magi, too, if they thought her wrong. He deserved this public tribute, feeble as it was, whatever his eventual end had been.
