Tavern knowledge - post your rumours and gossip here

Are you planning a gathering? Forming regular patrols? Have something to share about your recent adventures? Or perhaps witnessed something others should know about? Then announce it here!

Taverns, inns and other social hubs are a big part of life for any adventurer. Besides providing lodgings and meals, it's where rumours and gossip is shared with the locals.

How this works
  • Post your announcements as in-character rumour or gossip going around. This can be anything, as long as it's something NPC's (such as tavern patrons and shopkeepers) would echo.
  • Your character starts the rumour and gossip. The locals simply echo it for other players to hear. When posting, note that it is your character telling and starting the rumour, not the NPC's themselves.
  • Your character either starts the rumour by telling it himself, or by being witnessed by the NPC's. If your PC had a brawl with another PC, you don't need your PC to be telling this rumour. You can simply post of how NPC witnesses are telling of your fight.
  • Rumours and gossip are just that, rumours and gossip. That something is posted here doesn't make it true. It's just something that's being told in-character.
  • Be considerate to the players who start rumours and gossip. Don't abuse the situation by apprehending the brawlers on your own initiative and claim there were NPC witnesses. Request DM involvement beforehand instead.
  • DM's can prune rumours at their discretion. NPC's are their territory. Listen to your DM's. And give them biscuits.
  • When attributing attitudes and reactions to NPC's, always check them with a DM first. Be very considerate towards other roleplayers with this.
The main purpose of posting these rumours and gossip is to allow other players to get involved in your roleplay and plots. It's all about networking. DM's can also benefit from this effort.

Discuss the intention and functioning of this thread here.

An example of a rumour started by telling:
Leore has been telling how Banites, Helmites, Tempites, Red Knight and Tyrrans are wearing bedsheats to pose like ghosts. They are the source of the undead sightings.
This rumour would/could then be retold by NPC's.

An example of a rumour through action:
Leore has been performing a chant explaining the origin of Bane, at the Rivermoot tavern.

An example of a rumour needing DM approval:
A Half-Elf troubadour by the name of Leore has caused some controversy in Rivermoot. A few days ago he returned from Silverymoon to perform a chant on the mythos of Bane. The chant explains Bane's origin and nature. Locals are reluctant to discuss the exact content of the chant, however.

Rumors spread that the black energies emanating from the crypt and other areas around Rivermoot, from which undead issue, is the work of the Banites.

Rumours to the contrary suggest it could have been the work of Helmites, Tempites, Red Knight-ites or even Tyrrans.

I hope this is DM approved otherwise we might as well post here with rumours that it's caused by the Helmites.
((OOC Uhm .. this is actually a rumor my PC started IG after aanother PC told him in Rivermoot that her "superior" Barid had told her to "expect" the black energies that have been seen around Rivermoot. Knowing Barid to be a Banite from other discussions in town, accurately or not, this caused him to suspect the Banites were behind it or in league with the undead somehow. He recounted his suspicions to a group of PC's by the Rivermoot bridge within earshot of the patrolling pikemen. I assumed according to the OPs guidelines that the pikemen would have repeated such a thing, especially with the open Banite activities within the town recently. Several PC's discussed it, with more than a few telling my PC he was wrong =) Still as an IG rumor I thought it was appropriate to post it here. If a DM wants to delete it feel free, but I was not aware that DM approval was required to post rumors here. Whether or not it is posted here it was in fact stated IG based on IC interactions. Sorry I don't remember the name of the suspected Banite PC my PC spoke to but it was a heavily armored female whose character description said something about circles under her eyes or some such.))

OOC: Perhaps posts to the "rumors" thread should be first sent to the DMs for approval. The post could include IC details of just how the rumor got circulated. This might help prevent a war of rumors that exists only in the forums. I am not saying that is what is happening here - but its clear it could happen. And I think its potentially dangerous for the players to have free reign over what rumors are actually spreading. A rumor that the Tyrrans are the cause of the black shadow and the undeath, for example, would be hard-pressed to gain any traction. Anyway, just a suggestion.

+1^ Great idea. It could be up to the DM whether to have NPCs "spread" the rumor or not by posting it on the forum. It also eliminates any possibility of even inadvertant metagaming as the source of the initial rumor would be unknown -- unless the DM wants it known.

Could we perhaps get an in game bulletin board at each of the major towns? That would probably work best rather than having single PCs dictate what is or isn't circulating around town as a rumor.

Rumors spread the priest of Bane throw a severed arm of a half orc that attempted to kill him in front of Warder Marshall saying that he was tired of wasting his time trying to protect Rivermoot and demanding to know whether an order has come from Silverymoon regarding the Banites. The warder did not answer him.

Two men wearing brooches with a raven perched on a jawless skull on their armor are in Rivermoot. They presented themselves as members of a mercenary company called the Bleak Ravens and are looking to expand their numbers and inquiring about the need for mercenaries in the area

Tavern patrons are beginning to grumble uneasily after a bald, abrupt and heavily armoured individual became upset during a conversation with another. Although not much was clear, words such as "200", "tracks", and "orcs" were used amongst many curses.
