Is Baldur's Gate still the death trap it was back in the day?

Perhaps the regulars can answer this question best.

Aki!
The short answer is no.
The slightly longer answer is that most areas are safe, especially near civilization. However, there are definitely some places one should not wander alone. Hope this helps. Hope further to see you in game!

Death trap? No.
Dangerous? You betcha! Don't trust static content to be safe - it's not all meant for squishy first-level PCs. Don't trust areas to be safe, unless those are frequently travelled - and even then be wary. And don't trust PCs to be safe - Baldurs Gate is a "rough and ready"-sort of town, and the people are likewise.

Since it is apparently no longer a metagaming offense to ask things like where nooblin related content is, and/or common places of congregation (Inn XYZ as opposed to Inn ABC etc.), tell me where people get started please and thanks?
(this is because me and Electryc have rolled up PCs)

Actually, that rule hasn't formally been changed yet as far as I know.
and/or common places of congregation (Inn XYZ as opposed to Inn ABC etc.)
The Elfsong benefits from its location, though some PCs may prefer the ambiance of the Helm and Cloak (or was that Cloak and Helm?).
tell me where people get started please
BG itself.

Thx for the tips.
H&C by canon is upper crusty, Elfsong and Blushing Mermaid come to think, are dives for crooks, one with extra salty food to promote drinking... look forward to checking it all out.

Yeah, I saw a couple players around, but still trying to find a rhythm for the PC (including not running up and saying hi to heavily armed PCs who look more interesting than NPCs), and trying to slowly, safely figure out the technical baloney. Managed to rest and then hours and hours later figure out how to get rid of the campfire and whatnot. Managed to accidentally put people on CvC warnings. Managed to be unable to find a cellar door two feet away from a static giver, but then noticing it was "there all along" hours later. Managed to figure out /re is a good way to reply to tells. Managed to /invertrun to prevent running all over the goddamn place. Managed to target rats "somewhat", the autopilot defend self type stuff once combat engages seems easier than attempting to target those little dudes. Basic comedy of errors type stuff.
