Game Clocks, Hilarious Bugs, and Fixes

Post by Zelknolf »

Some bugs associated with BG's host got poked at with great intensity today. We have an attempted fix for them, but the testing of it is not yet exhaustive. Players on BG are asked to keep an eye on the game clock and to make note of any time that it appears to move backwards, or any time that it appears to jump forward an inordinate amount. Don't rely on the RP script timer if you actively observe forward movement of the game clock; the bug makes it an unreliable measure (see below).

A few things that are symptomatic if the clock is not, in fact fixed:
- Spell durations being unusual (short-duration spells lasting for a very long time, or long-duration spells ending prematurely)
- Sudden changes of environment effects (going from day to night without a sunset, or night to say without a sunrise)
- Inability to see PCs or NPCs after an area transition (sounds unrelated, I know, but in essence the game becomes confused enough to believe that it does not need to check for what your character is able to see, or who can see your character, for a very long time.)
--- Related to this: if you ever end up unable to see hostile NPCs because of this, it won't stop them from trying to kill you. Run away.
- Double RP Script feedback (usually, this will follow a long delay in the scripts, and then appear as a regular message followed by an inactive RP message).

Initial observations suggest that the fix was effective, but the bug was difficult to reproduce, so we can't be certain just yet. Reports of the sort, if they're observed, would be greatly welcomed.
