Hi, I'm stephen Hamilton and I have been accepted to bring in my monk / Druid character Sojobo. I have based this character off of the concept of a yamabushi, but with some added twists to help blend them into D&D and Faerun. I was looking to start him off somewhere near Chondalwood, but I hear that Shadowdale is the normal starting point. Would starting closer to Chondalwood be acceptable? If so, which server should I use?
Also, my character is going to be heavily influenced by the Kara-tur settings and I would be happy to speak with any DMs or players that either have questions or comments.

Welcome indeed.
There is no official starting point in ALFA. You can start wherever you wish. However, I'd strongly recommend you to check the times during which the servers are usually populated and the times the DMs are usually on. The former can be figured out by checking the Gamespy or by simply asking. Dm times are posted in one thread (or actually two threads) in the documentation forum.
Be prepared for losing your first character(s) soon, btw. It usually takes some time to get the survival rule #1: Don't solo. It's not unheard of to keep your first char alive even a year but... not likely.

Welcome.
Yeah, sometimes you want to be careful with your first PC concept, then again, cautious play can also help survival. Good luck however you choose.
As to servers with a substantial "Eastern" presence... I certainly know Sembia has a Kozakuran enclave, merchants who sell pretty gear that sort of fits into that milieu, though Sembia is probably more to be thought of in "Renaissance Italy with all attendant merchants and double dealing", and not itself some serene land of pagodas. Again, good luck wherever you start.

Re: Onigashimas
Welcome to ALFA and I highly recommend Sembia as a starting server in that case. There are vendors and areas for these kind of PCs although I'm sure you would be fine on any other server... Also if you are interested in Shadowdale it borders Sembia and you can always have your PC travel to it... See you on Live hopefully.stephenhamilton wrote:...my character is going to be heavily influenced by the Kara-tur settings...
