Greetings from a Returning player

Post by Starspawn »

Greetings all.

I just recently returned to Alfa after spending some time away to get married and have children and get all the various things in real life situated so that I can actually find time to pick up my love of roleplaying and fantasy again. I can't even remember when exactly it was that I left but it was still during NWN 1. I mainly ran in the Silver Marches and the Sands of Anaurauch at that time but I seem to recall many more servers than there are in ALFA currently.

Back in NWN 1 ALFA, I managed to run through several character concepts. I don't think I made it past level 5 back then. I now have managed to come up with several more concepts that I can throw into the fire. I started my first (NWN2) character over the weekend on the Silver Marches server. I chose to pick up where I had fond memories from the past even though it looks like Moonshae is the place to be for new characters. I do have a question. Are there enough static quests to take a character from level 1 to level 2? I've looked at the DM calendar and am not sure that I will be able to play during the one listed session for TSM. From past experience I know that a new level 1 character doesn't stand much chance of surviving by combat for very long at all. I did notice that we now get xp just for being logged on but even just seeking 1000 xp for level 2 will take a long time if I'm just walking around the streets familiarizing myself with the new town.

I am in Silverymoon right now. Is it safe to travel to other cities on the server if I travel during the day and stay on the road or is that going to be subject to deadly random encounters no matter where or when I travel?

I just downloaded NWN Platinum from Steam on Friday so in the next week I'll be familiarizing myself with the differences from NWN 1 and lurking around the boards, making sure I'm caught up with any rule changes since I last played. If there's anything I need to know, please tell me. I play good with others and can take both pointers and constructive critism in and out of game.

Soloing is the fastest way to die in Alfa..so trips on the road alone at anytime are not a good idea.
welcome back bye the way :D

On the Silver Marches server? Easily, although not every static is safe to solo for a first level character.

DMs are almost like real people, in that they have a mind of their own... Just keep an eye on the server population here in the forum, and don't hesitate to jump to another one if you can be part of a DM'd event there. As for survivability... even level 3 PCs can still fall to a single critical hit, or a failed save.

Perhaps surprisingly, it's actually doable if you have the time. Just emote something every now and then.

The latter. The encounters are often avoidable, but there's no guarantee.
If there's anything I need to know, please tell me.

Well, if that location listed on your forum account is still accurate, there are people active on TSM during the evenings-- and I'm plenty happy to help noobs get around, level up, find static content, etc. I'm not sure if thinkpig's stuff is on any calendars; he's generally more vague about when things will be running, and Regas has made some showings on the server lately too; I wouldn't sign off as doomed to not be DMed too hastily (but if it feels like a dry spell after trying, there's always BG and MS ^^d ).

Welcome back to the land of milk and honey / tears and blood.

Don't sweat it too much, getting to level 2 is quicker than it ever was in ALFA and we made many alterations to increase survivability. I'm sure you'll find the ropes quickly.

And, as pointed out, if you have questions or need help don't hesitate to ask here, via PM, in chat or in game!

Cheers,
The power of concealment lies in revelation.

Practice in the terrible single player campaign to get used to camera quirks, spell lists, all the other stuff that's different between 3.0(ish) D&D and 3.5, at least as interpreted by NWN2. Or, just dive in and hope to find people who'll shepherd you through basics like PC Tools or how to rest with your campfire and whatnot, how to get rid of it... lot of quick learning curve type stuff but hope you'll have good fun.

Single player isn't that bad, especially MOTB... but he is right, playing it should get you used to the system at least.
First Character: Zyrus Meynolt, the serene Water Genasi berserker. "I am the embodiment of the oceans; serene until you summon the storm." Zyrus: http://tinyurl.com/9emdbnd

Second Character: Damien Collins, the atypical druid. "What? Being a stick in the mud is boring. No pun intended grins"
