I tried a half dozen IP addresses and addresses through Direct Connect... while other players were online on MS... but I could not connect...

I believe it was a connection issue. Didn't think it was that at first though, since I was on BG fine, and then tried to login to MS and started getting the connection issue (I had a solid wifi connection at the time, still would not connect), then I tried BG again, and could not connect.
But I just waited then for a while and tried again, and it worked.
