DM style...

Post by johnlewismcleod »

This is unabashedly stolen from Riotnrd, but it applies better to my style than any text I might have fashioned for myself:
Notes on DM style:

- I'm a big believer in a persistent game world, and this means that things will happen whether or not the PCs choose to get involved.

- I'm a big believer in player consequences. Choices that players make will alter not only their own futures but also the game world. Not everything you do will permanently alter everything, but I hope that you will see things that can live on after your PC leaves, or dies.

- I'm a big believer in smart play, that is, using your abilities and skills creatively and realistically. I will give you every opportunity to learn things, but I will from time to time present challenges that cannot be overcome strictly by direct combat. Not everything you meet will be an appropriate challenge for you, whether its too great or too small. I urge you to use common sense (as it befits your PC) to look before you leap

- I don't like it when PCs die. I am not vengeful and don't DM for the power it gives me, I do it to create a shared narrative and a story that can live on in the memories of everyone. I will not intentionally try to kill you, and I will always try to create an 'out', though you may not see it unless you look carefully. I will try to avoid situations in which PCs go up against other PCs, because its almost always hard on the loser, but neither will I absolutely prevent it from happening. Be yourself, and play as makes sense to you, and I will try to accomodate you.

- I appreciate feedback, and sometimes I do make mistakes. I ask that if I make a decision you are not comfortable with or do not agree with, let me know... but I won't necessarily change my mind on the spot. I especially like constructive feedback, when you tell me what you like, what you dont like, what I could have done better, what I did well. Just don't be a jerk, and I won't be a jerk :)

Thanks, and I look forward to playing with you all.
The only few points I would like to add that additionally apply to my style (if I can presume to claim one ;) ) is:

1) I'm not a very good typist or multi-tasker...please limit tells to necessity when you know I'm questing...other times I'm as chatty as anyone

2) When I see extreme character stats, either high or low, I take note and will try to give the player who chose them an opportunity to use them. My assumption is extreme stats are chosen because the player wants to RP them.

3) I like skill/ablity/spell use...please feel free to use them as appropriate without waiting for a prompt from me. Some skills are not obvious when they are being used without the PC either emoting or rolling a check (i.e.: I don't want to ask for a tracking check if unbeknown to me the PC is actually pulling a bottle of ale from his/her pack, etc).

4) When skill checks are being made please slow down the action a bit and give me time to relay the various results to the various PC's...it could save a life, heh

Added:

I should use this opportunity to speak to the subject of misogyny and depravity. These are, of course, land-mines that can be OOC hurtful to both PC’s and DM’s. I try to make my nasty NPC’s (and PC’s, for that matter) believably naughty…thus I will dance about these distasteful subjects occasionally.

I would like to state clearly that while I am willing to try and make this gritty RP part of my toolset, I will avoid graphic depravity when that point is approached…I personally am not comfortable going graphic with some of these subjects (i.e.: intercourse, rape or torture for example).

If a player wants to go there, I will try to “hang-in” as best I can, but please respect my limits if I abbreviate some of this.

Everyone has different limits and sensibilities on various subjects, of course, and if I ever present ugly RP that approaches a player’s limits, please tell me so I can abbreviate it at that point.

I also request that if other PC’s are present at any event of this type that the limits of all are respected. Please do not hesitate to speak up.

We are here to have fun, not to be victimized by the tales we become embroiled in.

You cut out the part about scripting and building, John! You can't only quote selected paragraphs from Riot :P
