P-Storage Issues: [edit] Use with caution.

by Curmudgeon
[Edit: P-storage is finally working again. Keep on the lookout for problems with the new workaround, but should be safe to start using storage, looting corpses, etc again. -AL]
Please refrain from using persistent storage until further notice.
Storage has been behaving poorly of late, causing emptied chests and server crashes. This issue is at the top of our current Tech Priorities and is being worked on. We'll let you know when it's safe again.
Thanks for your cooperation.

That includes you as well, Alara!

And remember; PC corpses are Persistent Storage objects as well. So... trying to loot one at the moment will likely result in server crash and loss of all corpse inventory.
Hoping to have this sorted out very soon. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Sorry to post here, but what is the status on this?

Still in effect. There is limited evidence that taking ALL of the contents of a p-storage object in one pass (loot all items, then close) still works without crashing the server or causing corruption, but incremental changes (removing one object, adding one object, then closing etc) seem to cause these crashes 100% of the time currently.
Also limited evidence that SoZ/1.22 may alleviate this, though haven't done stringent testing on this (networked character vault, remote SQL DB).
I don't believe it's been tested on BG yet. (No pstorage or PC deaths yet?)

No on either count, afaik. Despite some folks' proclivity for dangerous living, nobody's managed to get dead, yet. And I don't believe there's any pstorage at all in BG, at this time.
P.S. Though Lem did manage to get down to -8 or -9 the other night, he got better

Then the DMs aren't doing their job. I hope the DMA fires them all, especially the HDM.

This issue appears to crash the server when a character dies also. On re-entry, the body is empty of items. I suspect this is due to the server crashing whilst copying the character's item objects into the body container.
Is there anything I can do to help resolve the issue? Being unable to loot SirCobalt's army of dead is cutting into my profit margins.

>< I didn't mean to die that many times... well ok, the first one I sorta expected, but the second one... *sighs* I wanted to keep him alive.

Can we turn off persistant storage of bodies until the persistant storage issue is resolved? Considering the server crashes when someone dies and the body object isn't populated anyway, there's nothing to lose by either making the body non-persistant, or dropping nothing.

I'm curious to know if this has been affected yet by the presence of the mirror zic's working on (assuming it's up and running, of course).

The workaround I installed this morning seems to be doing it's job, and p-storage appears to be once again safely accessible. What this means for you:
PC corpses will once again have whatever loot they died with, and will be move-able by looting the "body" item (corpse will respawn with remaining inventory when you "drop" the body).
PCs dying should no longer trigger a module crash.
Authorized persistent storage containers (Storage chests, bookshelves, armoires, desks) may once again be used to store items your PC does not want to lug around on his/her back. If you're not sure if a given container is a persistent storage object, assume it is not, lest you lose valuable gear on a module reset.
Please report any problems observed with this system promptly. I don't anticipate many suprises from it, since it's the old system propped back up again (instead of a whole new system, thank goodness).

Please take heed to these words.
DO NOT PLACE PORTABLE CONTAINER ITEMS (CHESTS {such as the ones we find as loot}, SCROLL CASES, ET. AL) INSIDE PSTORAGE, ESPECIALLY IF THEY'RE FULL! YOU'LL BUST THE MUTHA, AND WE JUS' GOT HER WORKIN' AGIN'.
