Getting spotted

Post by Ifthir »

Is there any possibility that a spot/listen success on a mobile check vs a PC could somehow indicate that to the PC?

Example: My ranger is in the woods and sneaks up on a bear, but the bear spots or hears my PC. Is there a way I could see a success roll output to the combat window? Thanks for listening!

There'll be a failure roll to your combat window soon enough. About the time the bear catches up to you and starts the mauling, I'd wager.

I'm not quite sure we want people to find out the spot and listen checks of mobs in the game (though trial and error admittedly may be dangerous  ), or do I misunderstand the request?

Some sort of warning if you spot something spotting you would be cool though, could be with an opposed roll bluff vs. "intelligent" critters that want to conceal their intentions, or a varying static DC taking that into consideration. Like... "You have been noticed by a bear.". That would of course always depend on the critter.
The power of concealment lies in revelation.

Or better yet, just a "Your position has been compromised"....leaving you to guess if it was the bear in 20 ft. infront of you, the three wolves down the hill, or the rabbit 5 foot away. :D

...but to answer the original question: no, there isn't.
The game engine makes those rolls "internally".

Hehe, Point being, you wouldn't necessarily KNOW that something has spotted or heard you if it has. Some beings may show no signs at all that they've seen/heard you when they have, until they bullrush you....and by then you know it. The move silently/hide in shadows skills aren't a spot skill as well. To be able to recognize if something has seen or heard you might require a spot roll or wilderness roll, depending on what's spotted you, to determine if the opposition is making telltale signs of such.

Best way to approach a situation like this is to take along a companion. Then, if your position is compromised, you don't have to outrun the bear. You only have to outrun your companion.
<paazin> Elves I bet are kinda fun to play.

Preferably someone that wears heavy armour, that doesn't have the barb or monk faster movement, or druidic/rangers wilderness stride and lugs around a big sword to slow him down. :P

Dwarves weighed down with gems are a good choice, I think.

Part of the risk of stealth is that you sometimes do not know if your position has been compromised. Intelligent adversaries (ie., DM'd NPCs, other PCs) can be expected to occasionally take advantage of this. I.e., ready to draw a weapon, or worse yet, a wand or something... In cases though, this might also just mean charging you, raising an alarm, whatever.

You tend to know if hostile AI (non possessed) stuff has seen you because it runs straight at you.

Creslyn did subdual; the morale system was from Teric, as improved upon by Wynna and myself (due for more adjustment soon).
