DO NOT GO AFK OUTSIDE THE GATES

Post by Rick7475 »

If you decide to go AFK for more than 5 minutes, just log please.

And if you go AFK, don't do it outside the gates.

The other night there was a hungry jaguar lurking around chased from his hunting grounds by orcs. A few PC's finsihed him. But if I see a PC afk by the bridge for more than 20 minutes, a hungry mountain lion might wander by, and they are meaner than jaguars.

There is an NPC patrolman walking back and forth along the small bit of road directly over the bridge.

Has he been removed or will the stated hungry mountain lion make him conveniently disappear?

I understand the warning, AFKing anywhere for that long isnt really cool, but hungry mountain lion on a patrolled road with guards 20 feet behind on the other side of the bridge presumably on the watch for danger? Thats a bit off kilter isn't it?

And, you know, not to take away from the point, but since when do Mountain Lions approach villages and attack full grown humans - armed full grown humans at that. Most non-magical animal predators actively avoid human settlements (except coyotes, who generally won't attack an adult human, and polar bears, who have learned that our trash and flesh is tasty).

The message I take from it is that it's not cool to lurk AFK for great periods of time now that we have an RP XP script that could be taken advantage of with the occasional emote or movement bump. If it takes an IC solution to curb abuses I'd rather have that than have the script pulled.

a) the exterior maps represent a much bigger area than the computer map allows. think of how close the undead and kobalds are.

b) the patrol man walks a long way....the lion may attack when the patrol man is out of sight/sound range (ie most of his patrol route)

When driven south from there dens and hunting grounds by a force of orcs?

I think Rick is going for a point. Maybe it's not a lion (i think he chose that in reference to being meaner than a jaguar), maybe an orc...but the prinicple is problay dont look for a tech rez if you stand outside the gates of a town when all the IC advice from NPCs (ie what's in TSM/savage frontier source books) indicates a few swords lengths from the gates is...well savage and anything can happen.

Plus it break immersion for everyone having someone stnading like a stunned mullet in a major PC walkway

Going AFK out there seems like a deathwish to me. The whole reason some characters stand guard at the end of the bridge is because of how dangerous it is.

Makes perfect sense for starving wild life to pick off people. Animals can get pretty desperate when their food sources are being devoured by orcs.

So beware the omega lion: the lion from which all other lions were wrought.

I understand the desire by DMs to want to cut back as much as possible on AFK. God knows that with my three little ones and wife I've been known to go afk for longer (sometimes much longer) than 5 minutes. Sometimes I am able to get indoors into an Inn or some such...sometimes I have to AFK with little warning. If ever a DM encounters me AFK they have my permission to boot me, or if they think I am abusing it for the 10 xp a day they can strip me of the xp...I guess I'd rather they do that than drop a dragon on me for circumstances I can't control.

I too have a wife, kids, and a very large and rambunctious dog. Sometimes I don't even have time to click the AFK button on PC tools as I dash from my computer. I'd hate to lose a character I like to play over something that is totally OOC. Can the boot option please be implemented instead of pwnage in these instances? Dock XP as well if you like, but I would hate to have a PC's "story" end over my dog knocking over my daughter's milk and cookies which is typically followed by lots of screaming, barking, crying and cleaning, sometimes all by me =)

Not to forget the completely unforseeable circumstances that make you need to rush away from the pc. Like the other week when my flatmate went in to labour and I was the only other person in the flat  , although fortunately in that occasion Wynna was kind enough to port Anselmo out of the area, rather than have a pack of hyenas eat him.
