It appears that 19 people running around hacking goblins to pieces will crash the server.....

Or someone exited the game instead of to the menu.
Apparently if you exit the game instead of quit to the main menu, you have a small (seemingly random) chance of crashing whatever server you were on.

was it 19 people in one party? or even 2 parties? I know that Large parties caused issues on another server a few months back. server crashed and all that stuff

If they were all using WASD to move in combat that would do it.
