A note on languages

Post by Swift »

Currently the language box for players is restricted to showing a maximum of 10 languages. Any more than this and the languages will not be usable by you. You will still understand the language if someone else uses it, you just won't be able to reply. Very brief testing last night seemed to show that the language list is re-organised on login, so the missing languages will not always be the same.

For the time being (ie until we can find a gui scripter to assist with the issue) try not to take more than 9 additional languages.

huh... I remember finding this out with Rhothomir (who had 12), to circumvent it just use the standard (d) or (e) etc when replying, the speaking will know you know the language, not ideal but works :)

ten languages? TWELVE languages....well, for an elf who lives as long as they do, I guess that's not that big of a deal....if I saw 12 languages on a human I would flip my wig, because realistically, they'd NEVER have time to do anything but eat sleep use the restroom, and study languages. :P

Psh. My "human" loves languages. :eew:

And realistically? It's fairly possible too, that some people have a knack for learning many languages without too much effort. I learned this in realistic linguistics. ;)

Honestly, I know of some folks who can throw down in that many languages.
They're called scholars for a reason.

*chuckles*
I'm definitely not one of them. Yes, I'm a typical Yank in that regard.
What's the average over in Europe?

There is an old joke that goes something like this:
  • What do you call someone who speaks more than three languages?
    A polymath.

What do you call someone who speaks three languages?
    Trilingual.

What do you call someone who speaks two languages?
    Bilingual.

What do you call someone who speaks only one language?
    American.

I'm down with that. Do they also have time for combat training, or studying magery? :D

Combat training? Studying? What's that? ;)

My time is spent learning languages and lore, only.

i'm quite sure they do. learning a language doesn't involve sitting in front of a book all day but simply to be exposed to it and willing to learn it. when i was first starting my crash course in english, they simply stuck a bunch of foreigners in the same dorm along with americans, and told us to get drunk. by the end of the week we all with greater or lesser success could communicate in english. same goes for just about any language. after a month in foreign country i wouldn't claim to be a lingquistics expert on the language, but i quite certainly can speak enough to get drunk or get slapped..

and

*shows two fingers* "BEERS!"

and

*waves two hands from top to bottom denoting 'curvy'' while watching a girl* "PRETTY!"

and finally:

*thumbs toward the bathroom pointing at cack* "PEE!"
