I agree completely with this topic. My experiences in vanilla ALFA was basically one big chunk of boring for me (except for the few times my character participated in DM sessions), primarily because:
1) I live in New Zealand (wacky timezones).
2) Higher-levelled people who just don't seem to die form groups of friends that it's hard for newbs to RP into. After all, who, IRL, would walk up to a group of people drinking in the tavern and say "Hi guys! Mind if I join you?" .
I admit I was also a bit shy, but the hardcore RP in ALFA meant that even if you encounter someone else on the street, you basically just nod and walk past because there's no real reason you need to speak with them. Same deal with taverns.
On a certain other NWN2 PW I go to, they have a campfire in an area. I think this is a pretty good idea: while there's nothing to differenciate a player and the average patron IC in taverns; people who sit around campfires are obviously travellers/adventurers and it's easy to start sharing tales, drinks, and whatnot. Hence, friendships are formed and newbs are introduced into society.
Just my two cents.

I agree with Mulu that helping out new players is a great way to keep them around. I have noticed that most players are very inclusive, at least in Rivermoot. My PCs (I've rolled 3 so far may the first two rest in peace) have consistently been invited into parties and not once have they been excluded when they asked to be involved in something. I have seen and done this with other players as well. It is a two way street though. If you play a recluse I find you tend to be left alone unless you do things that are very interesting.
Anyway
Good point Mulu, we should all try and engage/involve others as far as IC to encourage possibilities of RP and level 1 survival.
Principle is good and maybe we dont need to say if we personally think the message applies to us or not

Something to consider is the lifecycle of PC's.
Normally in community's like this, there are core groups of players. They played together, level together and get in plots together. They advance in levels.
Because of their higher levels, they will no longer do things that newcomers will do. If they do, it is not worthwhile. The way NWN2 is balanced means that a level 3 will breeze through anything a level 1 will find challanging. Where is the story and adventure in that?
Of course, this is only relevent if the content is centered around static quests and random encounters. When DM campaigns come into play, it's a different story.
Still, the 'one character'-rule is at play here. With other PW's one could simply roll another low level toon and give it some allegiance to your main. Here? We can not.
I agree with the points raised so far, in that newcomers should feel welcome. This is very important, not just here but everywhere. First impressions are very important. The way someone is introduced to a community determines the input and effort he will make for it.
Still, it's worthwhile considering the veteran's perspective in this.
As a last note, this is coming from a level 1 njewb that indeed finds it difficult to get involved in anything.

I dunno about this whole 300 gp thing you guys keep talking about. Whenever I make PCs (and I'm sure other people will agree) I spend a large portion of that initial 300 on armor, weapons, and miscellaneous supplies. By the time a PC is actually ready to go out exploring, they have much less than 100 gp left.
If they're lucky.

200? Really? Hmm....
So.. um...yeah...I have a 'special' mission from the Marshall. Seems too many new sellswords are coming to town. Anyone want to go camp the newb spawn point with me? No exp to speak of, but 200 gp in loot a head!

And for those who are shy on the humor gene, yes, I am only kidding.
