... a correction, as I totally got cubit wrong; cubits go from elbow to fingertips, and you'd measure them by laying the forearm out and placing a finger of your free hand up next to the fingertip of the measuring arm, then slide the arm down until the fingertip is under your elbow, then repeating until it's time to mark or you've learned the length of the thing.

I believe E.G. also used "candlemark" fairly often as a unit of time. I think it was meant to be roughly equal to one hour.

For distances, one league was taken to mean a day's march, and the Stout Folk would use axe-handles as a length measure.

Candles were often sold in ancient times with marks on them that would take a lit taper roughly an hour to burn down to . .. hence the reasoning of Candlemark as a unit of time
