Where should a thief be from?

Hi there,

I'm new to ALFA (not a member but I'm playing on the OAS) and want to create a background story for my human thief.

But unfortunately I don't know much about the FR and can't figure out which region would make a good place for her to come from.

Can someone give me an example and perhaps describe the suggested region shortly?

Thanks in Advance :)

Thieves as a rule come from cities, where there are enough marks to fleece and crowds to hide in. But large cities are all over the Forgotten Realms, so what kind of Human did you have in mind to play?

If you're looking for a quick answer to get started though, I'd advice Waterdeep. It's about as cosmopolitan as cities get, nothing looks strange coming from Waterdeep.

A thief can come from just about anywhere, in my opinion. But is more likely to have grown up somewhere poor and chaotic, perhaps. Like Luskan, I've heard that is a real sh*thole. I suggest that you search the internet for some maps over Faerun, and then read about a few areas. Soon you'll have a good concept for your char, and you can develop it as you go along. There is plenty of reading material out there :)

I'm certain that you'll find something that you like, and good luck with your character!

whoa, thanks for the quick reply^^

waterdeep sounds to be a good place to start :)

EDIT: The Homepage says, Tervale is in the Heartsvale Region. I found a very good map of Faerun, thanks to Wikipedia, but I can't find Heartsvale on the map. I suppose it's near Icewind Dale? If so, I might choose Luskan instead of Waterdeep, because its not that far away.

Tervale isn't in the Forgotten Realms. It's a place where the OAS is, a place which is supposedly in the forgotten realms when you play on the OAS. But basically, once your in a live server, that place never has and never will exist.

BTW. the best map is the full scale map here: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/wd_ma ... ge_150.jpg

oh ok, then I can take any town and the distance is the same^^

but I once read when you decide to recreate your character on a live server he will still have his memories from tervale. so its not like it never existed? or is that an old rule?

I did read that somewhere too ............ but I have never met any one in game that actually RP'd his experience from OAS into live.

Also, if this Waterdhavian/Luskany (?Luskanite, Luskanian?) thief is big concept character for you, I would not make him the first character you play on live ALFA. The lifespan of the first ALFA PC tends to be quite short. :)

The location of the OAS is a known spot in Faerun, and there are maps in the stickies on the OAS forum. Basically it is a a few days north of Citadel Adbar. The town itself is fictional but the location and setting are not.
