Under the current settings, the only case in which you'll fail to accrue credit for being logged in, is if you do not speak, emote, move, change the direction of your PC's facing, or send any tells during a period of seven real-life minutes. If you return to the keyboard at any time afterward, you'll start to accrue RP credit again. I think this is quite generous, as the system is supposed to rewarding RP with XP, really. If you aren't so much as turning in your seat, making an emote, or yawning in the space of seven minutes, I'm not sure we can still characterize that as "RP".

I'd encourage people to try this out on the OAS2- for testing purposes, it's giving you a message every 7 minutes - "RP increment" if you've emoted, "Location Increment" if you've moved, "No Increment" if you've been absolutely, completely inactive. Try playing in your normal mode, and see how many of the latter you actually get- even just switching between windows to see if anyone's logged in tends to cause inadvertant movement of your PC, really.

CPU drain from the activity monitoring seems effectively nill as well.

That's some great info. I'm going to see if I can get a copy of the exp. and help test things out a bit.

Let's reward those stalwart PC's (like Mizbiz who for a while would be the only one logging into DD for hours hoping other players would stop by and keeping the server alive when there were virtually no DM's) who wait for players to show up patiently keeping the numbers on Gamespy attrative with Exp that they have definitely earned and forget about the abusers who are most likely an insignificant number to worry about.
So true. This is alfa, folks...have a little faith inthe members of this most virtual society ;)

This is especially interesting for lone/evil PCs; these types don't tend to gather friends around them, and a DM will often be their only source of real roleplaying available.

I speak with experience, since most of my characters fall in that category. Roleplaying alone is ok, well...it certainly ain't great fun, and at times you'll just alt+tab. You stay logged on so that the server marks 1/20...and so people actually log in (in my cases i hoped for a dm, because other players typically wanted my black skinned head on a plate :) ).

With a sliver of xp per hour, it would at least have made those hours count while you're waiting for real interactions to occur.
Coming soon in a server near you.

Assuming you can get much more than 8xp/hour doing ANYTHING else, I don't see why 8xp/hour you are logged on would hurt. Tracking this through the database would help us iron out those who blatantly abuse the system. We are talking 1344xp per week being constantly logged on...

Keep it simple, simple enough to monitor as well...

That said, I strongly believe there should be plenty for players to do off-DM hours, for all alignments. It would be as simple as exploring, travelling, talking to key NPCs to get to know the area (server). It is what takes you from commoner to adventurer. If we track the number of hours the player has been logged on total, we can also make sure that certain things don't trigger until the player has been around long enough. (NPC can remember seeing this person running past ever so often, and decides to strike up a conversation).

Castles in the air - they are so easy to take refuge in. And so easy to build, too.
