Sleeping outside.

Currently, only druids and ranger are allowed to sleep in the dirt without first setting up a tent and starting a fire. Can barbarians and spirit shamans - both classes with class skills in survival and know: nature - also be allowed to sleep in the dirt without setting up camp?

Is there some PnP rule that I am unaware of that handles this?

This aint any sort of priority. It is just something that seemed silly to me.

I believe it actually is based on D&D rules for that, though yeah I kinda agree... infact I think everyone should be able to sleep without tents etc, but should have a penalty for doing it. with Nature types avoiding the penalty.

Anyone with a 10 WIS can take 10 on a Survival check and provide food for themselves in the wild. I definitely don't think they should need a tent to sleep in. Hell I can't start a fire without matches, but I've certainly slept outside without a tent.

If we want something that screams 'camp', lets lay down a bedroll like NWN1.

Whatever the case it should be based on survival skill, not class.

Shelter is a little bit trickier than forraging, to be fair. I'd agree on it being something that should be survival-based rather than class-based, but you can't prepare spells without a reasonably-sheltered and peaceful place to do it and a full night's sleep-- and I'm not sure if you heal any hit points or ability damage (I'd have to check). At least, the way I've understood the "You can't rest here" was "Well, sure, you lay down right there for as long as you want, but it will be so miserable you won't get any statistical benefit from doing so."

Survival DC 10 allows "Get along in the wild" but makes only specific reference to food and water.

I think the Survival DC for "provide adequate shetler for spell preparation and hit point restoration" would be significantly higher.

I'd say like a DC 20.

BUT -- if this were PnP there would be a ton of modifiers. The first (and a big) one would be...

Do you have a tent?

If the answer is "Yes", then barring a nasty extreme environment I'd say pretty much anyone could do it.

Make it DC 20 and have tent items that add 10 to the skill check :)

Get along in the wild. Move up to one-half your overland speed while hunting and foraging (no food or water supplies needed). You can provide food and water for one other person for every 2 points by which your check result exceeds 10.
"Get along in the wild" and the food portion are two separate sentences. Sleeping outside comfortably is a DC 10.

I would assume "get along in the wild" means being able to adequately rest, especially lacking any rules stating exactly how hard it is to rest in the wild.

The big thing you'd need a tent for is wind and rain. We could require tents only be needed when its raining, which is my vote.

I on other hand think only the nature related classes should have that benefit in the outside.

I still remember how silly it was in nwn1 when being a ranger, barbarian of john doe wizard would be the same when it came to rest. And thats just ridiculous, the guys that do make the woods their home would obviously be at ease in there.

I don't think anyone would be able to have a "proper" night of sleep without a tent, with the humidity falling over you, with all the weird sounds and strong wind, trees making noises, animals and other stuff. Someone not used to this sort of environment will not have a decent night of sleep and will wake up with minimal rest done.

Its an advantage for those classes and i think it should be kept like that, and add barbarian for sure >_> spirit shaman I'm not sure I don't know the class that well to know if they are for sure nature related or can be spirit shaman of the spirits of the library... >_>

Spirit Shamans are nature related both in lore/canon and in actual class skills.

Also, if you are a wizard and you pump the same number of skill points into survival as that ranger over there, then no reason you should not be equally at home in the wilds as he.

The items in question are cheap, is this an encumbrance related issue in disguise?

Not like I imagine a lot of PCs carry around a 10lb iron pot, a small axe for firewood, and a dozen other living essentials for survival... seen a lot of stuff like that at an outfitter shop in BG.

Now that we've got "rest without a tent" systems in, did anyone notice you can just spam the rest button until you pass the Survival check? No cool down, no "lost the chance for the day sucker", basically this just means 20lb* more of carrying capacity, and sometimes having to hit the Rest button 3-4 times rather than once?

Is that not a bit of a vulnerability to fix up?

(EDIT: the 20lb being "the tent you can just leave at home")

Seems like a bigger problem then what we had before... IMO
