Placeables with VFX

Anyone had any success adding a visual effect to a placeable using the Appearance (special effect) slot in properties? I'm seeing nothing in the toolset or in-game when I try. I saw a post on the Bioware forums that suggested that the placeable should be non-static and useable, but that doesn't seem to help.
