PC naming conventions

I'm going to guess this has been discussed sometime before but......

I have seen other places where players do not list their PC's name in the name bow at the time of character creation, instead using physical descriptors such as "a muscular, bald dwarf" --

it allos people to use any different names if they choose to and cuts meta a bit ...downside is it forces a lot of note taking.

Thoughts?

I've seen this done on other PWs too but in the grand scheme of things, a name is a relatively small piece of meta information. Level and class on the otherhand...

Descriptive names like that would be great for a small PW... but no so good for one like ALFA (the note taking would be horrendous)

Just ask anyone who remembers Lolla what they think of descriptions as names :D

*shrugs* It may be meta, but so is the fact that you only hear the name once and thereafter rely on the floaty text. No bard in the tavern tells tales of PCs, no NPC mentions your name in passing, etc. I for one don't have time to write down every RP name of every 2-bit adventurer I meet across 5 servers, let alone cross-index it so I can find them in my journal quickly.

If you expect me to call you something other than what is displayed, expect me to mess it up the first few times (even as a DM). I'd rather have you put a nickname in the floaty that most people will know you as (even if it's a discriptive nick name like Bearded Pete or Baldy). Let them that get to know you write down your real name rather than vice-versa.

I had the hardest time at first remembering what to call them since they had put their "hidden" names in. I saw tons of others call them by the wrong name on occasion.
