I think the idea of it is spot-on, LancasterX_2. I have a profound dislike for the term 'statics' to begin with. Quests should be dynamic and empower DM's, not replace them.

If we can do something you've suggested and centre it around a server plot, we'd be golden. And if we can work in the reality that it will be repeatable, it would be even better.

How about some sort of strongpoint that is fought over between two (or more) factions. One faction is NPC-ed and controlled by DM's. One faction is basically played out by the actual roleplayed characters.

When the strongpoint is in control of the NPC's, the players can assault it. Once the players conquer it, it'll be in control of their faction NPC's until the DM's have it reconquered by the NPC faction. Then it can be reconquered by the players again.

To add spice to it, conquest would require several factors in-place. A supplyroute would have to be set up and maintained, the strongpoints defences would have to be sapped away, the wounded and dead caried away and tended to, etc. Make the conquests depend on a number of conditionals that the players can fight for or against.

Every now and then, things could be changed or DM's can intervene as result of what's roleplayed.

This is just a quick rant on the subject. I've been up for 15 hours and it has been a busy day indeed, so apologies if I do not make much sense.

I'd really like to put this principle to work on the OAS2 for the NWNCON 4 in late September. Just something to test out the principle, make a good show towards the public and help OAS2 DM's in their observations and interactions. It shouldn't have to be too extensive or difficult, just the basic principle. Once we have a working model, it could be taken over by other servers.

If anyone is interested in making this happen on the OAS2, please PM me. I have some building and technical skills but I'll need help to make this happen.

I'm moving this to brainstorming. This subject should be set apart from the other more general discussions in General Discussions. In my experience, ideas with merrit are done more justice in Brainstorming than in General Discussions, in terms of replies and attention.
