A good example is that, even if you are paused, your PC will continue to bleed. I don't think pause helps much with spells either.

On a totally unrelated side-hijack of this thread, let me toss in a devil's advocate serving of food for thought:

I have to say that it could be totally reasonable to have combat depend also on the user's skill at handling the game. Why? Not because it is good or reasonable per se...

but because it is really stringent with considering that in every "social" interaction, the skill of the user usually counts for more than his / her PCs stats. If combat really only should depend on the PC's ability, not the player's, enforce first that social interaction only depends on the PC's ability, not the player's. ;)

Yes, but making a social faux pas does not usually result in bleeding out and having to roll up a new PC.... :wink:
