Are They Hiding?

Post by Dyslexic_Author »

One of my biggest problems with nwn2 is that its hard to tell if someone is stealth mode when you have spot them. Example, i fallowed an npc once all the way across four areas and never knew the character was even trying to be stelthy. The dm had to tell me.

So what i suggest is this if it is at all even possible. When something is in stealth they have a floating txt over their head, kinda like the afk thing, but in grey or something that indicates they are actively trying to conceal their presences. It doesn't have to be intrusive but some kind of indication would be nice.

We could also apply a VFX that makes the PC transparent. They already look transparent to their player; this way they'd look the same to everyone else as well.

I don't know if there is any way we can change their animations?

Yeah, the 'sneaky' posture is also only visible to that player AFAIAA, to everyone else your char is walking normally. Bit crap really; should be faded and sneaking.

We currently use transperant to indicate "heard, but not seen" -- so that might get a little confusing. But unless we can mine the stealth animations and throw them onto the sneaking creature for everyone else to enjoy, that seems like the lesser evil.

There's no difference between the stealthed standing and the non-stealthed standing animation, so we'd still have a bit of bother at times.

They faded grey indication, while a bit of a strain on immersion, might work better, if we can make sure it only gets shown if you spot someone, heh.

actually, heard but not seen shows up as a totally black character. Using a transparent to indicate someone stealthed but seen seems to work IMO

I use the 'Search' PCTools emote to cover that base*, but an automatic solution would of course be preferable.

*Which only suits female characters. The male emote of the same name has the PC look around for lost change.

Indicates not seen because of cover. ;)

(I know the calculation isn't perfect; can get cover from funny bumps in the ground sometimes.)

odd because they've been right next to me and totally black many a time - my spot skill sucks, my listen is marginally better, so i often hear but don't see folk

if we can do that, it would be awesome.
even as a DM I allways ask people if they are on sneak...
so I'll know how to approche a situation with NPC around them.

so if we can make sure they looked faded when spoted... that would be awesome.

I have an idea.. Rather then trying to have two things to indicate wether you heard or saw someone why not do this if possible. Btw i am not scripter.

- Make all "stelthed" pc and npc transparent uniformly while stealth.
- When a player spots or hears someone/something, introduce a script which tells the player how they detected the presence of the hidden person with a blub like "you hear the movement of something" or "your eyes catch the presence of something" in yellow txt the detecting player can see only.

hell if you wanna get really creative with the idea you could even have different blubs indicating how easy or difficult it was to spot or hear the subject. EX: "You barely notice in the corner of your eyes the presence of someone" or "You notice right away the presence of something"

As for all those "somethings" i mentioned "insert name here".
