Drow Light Penalties

Post by Mikayla »

I've noticed in playing Lotus that I seem to be saddled with the drow light penalty (-1 to attack, -1 to all saves, -1 to all skills) even when its dark. This is a pretty severe set back (especially for a class-level 1 PC). Can this be fixed?

dumb question alert

Are you sure the penalty is actually applied, or does the character sheet just show it?

I've no idea how to tell actually. The character sheet shows it, but I don't know if it is actually applied - I avoid combat!

Try rolling a skill check with the DMFI when you have a (dark) moment, that should tell you whether your rank is penalised. Not that I'd have any solution if it is...

Attacking a campfire or tent you created works too. The combat log is more accurate than the character sheet concerning AB.
The power of concealment lies in revelation.

Is playing a drow character and then not being light averse something to be expected these days?

I will repost my original post with added emphasis:

In regards to the other questions - I forgot to test it and check logs tonight to see if its just the character sheet or if its really taking affect at night. I did check in a cave, and in a cave, both the character sheet and the combat logs show the penalty is *not* applied, so in caves I'm fine. I'm still not sure about outdoors.

I believe this is a bug that's been in NWN2 since release. I don't recall if it ever got patched out, but I didn't see anything in the patch notes.

You might be stuck unless it really is simply a display bug, which is doubtful.

from the NWN2 wiki

http://nwn2.wikia.com/wiki/Drow
Light Blindness: Drow suffer -1 circumstance penalty to attack rolls, saves, and skill checks when outside. This is improperly applied whenever the Drow character is outdoors, even during night time.

OK, I finally got a chance to test it, and the previous posters are correct - the penalty is not just on the character sheet, its applied as well. I am at -1 on basically everything even at night.

So, what can we do about that? That is a pretty huge penalty to a level 1 PC, especially a level 1 PC who needs 6000 exp to hit level 2, and who cannot access the usual static quests, merchants, etc. I mean .. I know I signed up for drow of my own free choosing, and we put a lot of penalties on drow, but this is over and above what I signed up for. Basically, it sucks. So, if someone has an idea how we might fix it, compensate for it, etc, I would appreciate it - losing 1 to BAB, saves and all skills is practically like losing a level - and I've only got *one* class level to begin with! :)

Can the base race characteristics be adjusted with 1.23?

If not with1.23 could there be a 'drow only' feat added to character creation which gives +1BAB, skills etc at night (given there are ones for rangers etc for 'in the wild' i'm sure a time one could be done?)?

Alternatively (and perhaps appropriately if 1.23 is some time off?)could there be a undroppable/unsellable/unstackable/plot item given to each drow that gives +1BAB, skills etc at night? Realisitically there's never going to be a legion of drow so not hard to keep track of. Just make sure the DM destroys it when alternative arrangements are made.

Dorn has the solution, methinks. Toolset up an item that gives those bonuses when equipped (like a ring or something) and then Lotus can equip it when she is outside at night and unequip it if she is ever out in daylight. Mikayla can certainly be trusted not to abuse it.

I was speaking with AL last night, and there are unlikely to be any new tech related things added to the To-Do list any time soon. This is part of the problem of our Live servers not being fully ready script-wise for surface drow. Unless someone is able to create, test, and then give the scripts to our Live servers, this is unlikely to change for quite some time. What is more likely to happen is that we will have dedicated UD areas go Live before this gets fixed. Unless of course we have some hidden script talent that decides to take this on before then.

If anyone knows any talented programmers or scripters, that is our greatest need in ALFA right now. Feel free to PM me or AcadiusLost with names or contact information.
