Will a Quad Core help in the toolset?

Post by indio »

They're cheap now and my mobo is quad core ready.

I've been very happy with my OC'd 4300 core2duo, and the toolset has been designed with multithreading capability. But will a quad core help?

Anandtech (and most others) believe if you're doing 3d rendering it will, but is toolsetting rendering? Baking maybe? Unlikely. The longest tasks are things like baking and saving. If these things are like rendering and will benefit from a quad then it's worth considering.

Anyone help me out here?

Dual-core problem

Post by Aelred »

Here is the info on dual-core - I suppose the same would be true for quad core.

Neverwinter Nights 2's engine is not optimized ('multithreaded') for dual core CPUs. As such the game only uses the equivalent of one CPU at any time, and can't be forced to fully utilize both for better performance.

HOWEVER...

The Neverwinter Nights 2 Toolset is a multithreaded application; as a result, it will utilize the benefits of dual-core processors from both AMD and Intel. However, the game it self will not benefit from/utilize dual-core processors.

Here is a recent thread on the subject:

No, it only uses dual cores. Quad core will let you run stuff in the background though, and if you're planning to get Bioshock, it's going to be the first game taking advantage of quad core.
